Donny Osmond to play GastonDonny Osmond will be playing Gaston on Broadway.http://www.playbill.com/news/article/99745.html If he is as good as he was as Joseph, should be a good show. He does have a boyish face so I'm not sure if that is right for Gaston. He might be able to put on the arrogant front because of his handsome looks but I wonder if he has played the "bad guy" before? Be cool though to see him killed off. |

He's too much of a pretty-boy for Gaston in my opinion.
| Mademoiselle Lanoire |
Isn't Gaston meant to be a pretty boy?
| LumBabsFan |
Gaston IS an egotistical pretty boy, so to speak.
Seeing Donny tomorrow, and looking forward to it. This is one stunt casting that I think they got right. |

Please give us the details. I never saw him perform as Joseph but he sounded terrific on the Canadian Cast version and though I don't like the video, Osmond was still good. But I can't deny that he can sing well. In someways, playing Gaston breaks with Osmond's usual roles so he might like this. He's only doing 9 weeks so isn't that short for most performers? |

Well, it's Donny Osmand, so it will be held over, I guarantee.
Stunt-casting isn't just to mix things up. It's not for a nice change in tempo. It's all about the money. Next thing you know, it will be Ms Spears up there as the teenage potts. That's just the way Broadway works nowadays. NOTE: I was just using Brittney Spears as an example, I just made that up on the spot. Don't worry! It's not that bad yet!! |

Oh, my. There's a scary thought. If they ever cast her in Beauty and the Beast (no matter what role), I'll boycott Disney. |
||
| LumBabsFan |
Disney won't touch her with a ten foot pole. Contrary to popular belief, they DO know what they're doing, as shown tonight.
People who know me know damn well that I DESPISE stunt casting, especially after the horror I had to endure the past few months when little Baby Jake was in the cast. I still have nightmares. This time, they DID IT RIGHT, and I'm VERY impressed and happy. Donny did an amazing job, really did shock me. Considering this was only his second show, I was ready to let a few things slide, but there wasn't much to correct at all. I always knew that the first act would be fine. Gaston's role is more comedic in Act I and Donny handled that with no problem. Act II is where I really got to my stickler point as that was where the real test was. Could he pull off the darker side of the character as Gaston makes the transition from funny, arrogant jerk to a plotting, murderous villian? Yes indeedy! For someone who's never played a bad guy before to the best of my knowledge, he really impressed me and fully deserved the applause he got at the end of the show. So straight from the mouth of she who hates stunts: he's very good. If you're in the area, go see him and support the show! |

I'm definitely glad they know what they're doing...but I do think they momentarily lost their minds when they casted Toni Braxton and Christy Carlson Romano. In my opinion, the latter can't sing (I have a copy of her terrible rendition of "A Change In Me" *shudder*).
That's great that he did a good job. Wish I could see it. |

I might go see Donny on Sunday, but I haven't quite decided yet.

musical_geek, go and go with an open mind. That's what I tell everyone =) If anything, know that if you do go, you're supporting an amazing cast of people. |

You do know that Britney Spears used to be a Mouseketeer. |

Key words: Used to be. =)

I saw Donny Osmand on Sunday night. I really enjoyed the performance!
I got a picture with him afterwards. While I was waiting at the door, there was this crazy chick standing next to me. She had a picture of some previous Lumiere, she was showing everybody. It was pretty funny. The end. |
||
| LumBabsFan |
...funny, I wasn't there on Sunday night, LOL.
Glad to hear you enjoyed Donny though, musical! |
||
| Luc |
Actually, in the back of my mind, I was thinking: Maybe this is actually LumBabsFan, but I would like like a total moron if I asked. And now I can say I'm so glad I didn't! |
||
| LumBabsFan |
Nah, I'm not as crazy as that. =) I'm actually very subdued and laid back at the door, waiting for only those I know, and saying hi to those who would recognize me. I only get crazy with them, not with strangers =)
Besides, Sunday was the Flea Market and they were selling pictures of Baby Jake Young. There's no way in hell I'd be showing THAT off or even buy it. |

I'm going to see him in November! I'm so excited!!!! I've never waited outside the stage door, but I might have to this time.
| LumBabsFan |
broadwaybelle, lemme know when you're going if you want. I love meeting people at the door =)
| broadwaybelle22 |
Sure! | ||

I see that as expected, Osmond will extend his time as Gaston.
http://broadwayworld.com/viewcolumn.cfm?colid=12978 He'll play the role up to and including December 24. However he'll miss for sure these dates.
Does Osmond take the final bow as the show's "superstar" or does he follow cast order? Really, regardless of who is in the show, Belle should have the final bow. |
||
| LumBabsFan |
Donny does NOT get final bow, no. Steve Blanchard as the Beast still gets it.
| Luc |
Does he really? I thought I remembered seeing Belle get it... Hmm. I think Donny should get the last bow. |
||
| LumBabsFan |
Belle gets it when the part is played by a star.
Good as Donny is, I'm kinda glad he doesn't get last bow. Stars are joining this as part of a company, and by not insisting on last bow, I admire that, showing that they do acknowledge that. JMO, of course. |
||
| Luc |
That's nice and all that Steve has been there for a long time, but Belle is the lead role, and therefore deserves the last bow. I almost died when she sang "A Change In Me". (sorry, can't remember her name - current B'way).
| Starsweeper |
I agree wholeheartedly!!!! Belle very obviously is a much larger part than the Beast. She sings more songs and is in more scenes. I just can't figure that one out. Do you think there's some sort of weird Disney sexism going on? |
||
| Luc |
...no. |
||
| LumBabsFan |
It's all about his seniority, trust me.
| MademoiselleMusicals |
I completely agree. |
||
| TR_Wolf |
You ARE joking right? It shouldnt be by who is the bigger star, I HATE it when that happens, it should be the bigger character roles! Beast then Belle should be the last bows, or both together purely because of the character link, Gaston isnt the biggest character so he should NOT get the last bow! Usually he comes either just before or just after Cogsworth/Lumiere/MrsPotts etc. I dont think any big stars should get preferencial treatment in a show like that. I remember Marti Pellow playing Billy Flynn in Chicago, he was a really bad Billy, good singing voice but his accent and acting was horrendous, but of course because he was in Wet Wet Wet and is seen as a heart throb to middle aged women it seems, he got rapturous applause and cheers, throughout, and had the most at the end, even though Roxie and Velma got the final bow, and SHOULD have got the biggest applause! It's unfair! |
||
| TR_Wolf |
Just watched the vid clips of him...
...he looks terrible :/ He looks far too old as Gaston, and looks a bit sort of pudgy instead of young, firm and muscly. Yeah he just looks too old, doesnt look like Gaston :/ |
||
| LumBabsFan |
Seeing him live is better. =)
| TR_Wolf |
Nah, for me no Gaston will surpass Earl Carpenter (currently Phantom in London), to me he *WAS* Gaston, the guy from the movie had stepped out onto the stage. |
