Don't Hug MeI just got cast as Bernice in "Don't Hug Me". I did it kinda on a whim, so I know very little about the play. I just finished reading it. It's cute... kinda silly. Anybody know about it or been in it?

Ok, so I am a director at a theatre. The playwright sent me a perusal copy of the show. I read it and thought how utterly stupid is this. Then, I see producitons of the show popping up everywhere and everyone loves it. Reviewers are all about it. it is a karaoke musical, songs are sung on a karaoke machine. So maybe my first impression was wrong. Let us know how it goes.

My first impression was the same. I thought it was so dumb. Then I read the script again... and it's starting to grow on me. I kinda like it. I still haven't gotten any form of the music, but we don't start rehearsals until the 15 of Jan, and I'm suppose to be getting it within the next day or so. I dunno. Yes, it's dumb, but I think it's suppose to be. It seems to me like one of those shows that's so silly that it's good. I don't know. I also live in the midwest and am performing it really close to Minnesota, so people will get the jokes. Thanks for the insight, though.
I still would like to know what other people think.

I can tell you that it is dumb. In fact so dumb it's brilliant. That is the very intention of the show to parody the Fargo/Minnesota dialect. And to playfully satirize how simpleminded they can be or that people can think they can be. I didn't know a thing about it either and I was supposed to direct a production of Seussical. The all of a sudden the rights get pulled and we are without a show. Someone suggested this show and to be honest, I really actually have not seen this particular one. Because since it was the holiday season, we chose to do the sequel instead, A Don't Hug Me Christmas Carol. I can tell you although we did not get a huge audience base (but that is because it was chosen so last minute and not a whole time to advertise) that it got an overwhelming positive respose. People laughed and laughed and my own brother who watches almost every football game televised, came to see this and wanted to come see it again. He normally hates theatre. I am not connected to the show at all but can tell you the show's writer is a very nice gentleman as I had to communicate with him about some music questions since the christmas sequel had just been finished just 2 months ago or so. If you do it right, it can be a huge success for people.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Jorge! I actually just got my music and after I got my initial giggles out, I realized how much fun it is. I can't wait until my read through on Jan. 5th.
So, since you did the sequel... I'm curious. Is Bernice in it? And what happens to her? Does she become a singer? Is she still with Aarvid? And since it's a parady of the Christmas Carol... who is the symbolization of Mrs. Cratchit? If it's Bernice, I'll crack up. I just finished playing Mrs. Cratchit at my college!

Bernice is in it and she comes back to get her waitressing job back as she didn't make it as a singer. Arvid is not in it but is replaced by Sven Yorgensen and it's hysterical. Gunner goes into a coma and Sven plays the ghosts of christmast past, present and yet-to-come. Very funny stuff. Enjoy!

Sad... no Aarvid? And she doesn't make it as a singer... awww... Poor Bernice!
Well, I start rehearsal tomorrow. We had our read-through and just that was a lot of fun. I'm really excited for the show- a little nervous seeing as I'm a soprano in a belter-ish role, but excited none the less.
