Does anyone know of any musical works with minimal dialogue?

Hi, I am auditioning for my school's spring musical soon and the director told us that the musical he has picked is a "musical work with minimal dialogue" and he also said to take into account that we don't have that many boys who would be trying out. So if any of you know any musicals that are basically operettas or have mostly all singing with only a little dialogue, could you please post them?! I would really appreciate it! I can think of a few right now, but I don't want to give people ideas, I want you to think hard and tell me the ones that you can think of on your own! Thanks for your help!
Trevor

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Les Miserables
Jesus Christ Superstar
Sweeney Todd
Seussical

Those are all Pop/Rock operas.

There are more. I just don't feel like going through them all.

thank you!

The Most Happy Fella has little dialogue, and neither many nor few guy parts.

thank you!

Those are all good but Dreamcoat, JCS and Les Mis all have a lot of guy roles, unless they'll be played by girls.

MsDivaKate do you know any other musicals that don't have that many boys then but still not much dialogue? thanks
Trevor

Ha. Whoops. Missed the whole lackage of boys thing. d'oh!

I thought perhaps Once On This Island as I had mentioned when you posted this in the other forum. Its still the only thing I can think of right now, for some reason.

CATS. You can cheat with CATS because there's only six males identified in song as he (Old Deuteronomy, Bustopher J, Tugger, Mistoffelees, Macavity, Gus). I've heard of Old Deuteronomy and Bustopher (who often doubles as Gus) being played by women. Mistoffelees is another character that I've seen played by a female because of the difficulty of the dance. Munkustrap is typically male, but he's never identified in song as male.

You could, in theory, get away with three males (Tugger, Old D, Macavity) and huge chorus of females.

And CATS is insanely popular right now at the high school level...

Hmm, what about Into the Woods?

No way, it definitely has a lot of dialogue and a lot of guys.

In order to pull off Seussical, you need a lot of guys and girls. You've got the Cat and Jojo (who can be played by girls if you need to), Horton, Mayor of Whoville, General Ghangis Khan Schmitz, Grinch, Yertle the Turtle, not to mention the Monkeys and Whoville men. Then there are all off the girl parts... I've never thought Seussical was a good high school musical. It's better in community theatre or college.

Godspell

5 guys 5 girls

Hard though... really hard for a high school group.

Why is Godspell so hard for a high school group?

Plenty of schools and youth theatres do it. Its very accessible. However I think they wanted musicals with minimal dialogue and Godspell has quite a bit of dialogue.

Yeah, Into the Woods is a GREAT show but it has a lot of diologue. However, it doesn't have THAT many boys, particuarlly in the Jr. version. I was in it once with only 6 boys (and not all of them were that good).
vanillabean

For the high school groups I've performed with it would be beyond reach.

Nothing like learning the opening dance 5 minutes before curtain in the hallway backstage....

Wow. It's sad to see that no one has yet mentioned my personal favorite, EVITA. Definitely something that teaches values right there. Oh yeah. Just go with it. Don't ask questions.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Les Miserables
Once on this Island

If you want minimal dialogue DON'T do Godspell. It has a lot of speaking. However I'd still consider it, it's a great show and really you can make it however you want.

Another show is School House Rock Live Junior, but I'd only do that if you were desperate. I was in that show in jr high-it's pretty terrible, but it is actually a fun show to be in and honestly, it doesn't take much talent! LOL But again, I'd only do that if there was nothing else.

Nine fits the bill.

but please don't let us be witnessing Nine Jr. in schools.

I can't think of any that have few guys and very little dialogue, but i've never heard of any non-professionals doing Cats. Am I wrong or is the dancing just too difficult for non-professionals? if you have the answer i would be very interested.

since it is a dance show, I would hope that school versions would only be done at dance schools. Otherwise it would be like a public school putting on Nutcracker.

Well that may just be your groups and that's not even the fault of those in your groups, but poor directors. Any show would be difficult if you're learning choreo right before opening. Plenty of high schools perform Godspell beautifully and because its so open to interpretation its very easily accessible to schools. But it doesn't fit what the question was asking anyways, as there is loads of dialogue.
thequeenbnumba1

Thanks for your help guys, I'm actually in college, so I know we wouldn't be doing junior versions or anything (sorry I didn't specify.) But I'm pretty sure we are doing Into the Woods because we found out they ordered the score from it! But that's for your help, good luck with any shows coming up!!!
jimbothecrab

Awesome, Into the Woods has great music, I would love to be Jack!
Baker

Into the Woods?

Your director lied to you. Minimal dialogue? Yeah, right.
girlofgrace_37

Les Miserables is pretty much all singing.

I would just like to point out (especially to the naysayers!) that I suggested this early on!

Do I win anything? LOL! Wink

Well you know there is the school edition on limited release Rolling Eyes

But seriously, Into the Woods, minimal dialouge? Your director is a bit off.
