do I have a chance?

Hey Everyone

Ok.... so heres the story.....

next year my high school is supposed to be doing Beauty and the Beast (it's a Reigonal Arts school) and I am very interested in trying out.

Although I am not sure whether or not freshmen are allowed to audition or not, I am pretty interested in going for the part of the beast (this show was the first show i ever saw which got me interested in acting/theatre - and to play the beast would be an honour. Oh, and yes I know i'm very ambitious for my age lol Smile )

I wanted to know if I actually have a slight chance at the part:

1) I'm 5'3" (yeah im short lol)

2) My range is from a bass low F# (F#2) To tenor c# (so i can handle the role vocally)

3) I've had a large ammount of acting and singing experience

of course, I do realize that my height and/or age might be an issue, as there are probably seniors who are taller, more menacing in structure, and have probably better experience, but I wanted to know what you guys all think? Thanks Very Happy

I'm assuming the role will go to a senior, but DEFINITELY try out as their are lots of smaller and bit roles. Since you are shorter, you may want to aim for Lefou or Maurice (as they both have potential to be memorable to the audience). Another very simiolar character to the two of those is Cogsworth. And then there's Lumiere. There are just so many parts. And even if you end up being some random soloist with one or two lines, you will have a BLAST and it will be a great experience.

Yes, I would absolutely recommend auditioning, regardless of how much of a chance you may have. If you don't, you will regret it. And whatever part you get, you will surely have a blast with the show.

Also, if you do a great job on whatever role you're given this year, the director will usually recognize this and remember it when casting you in the future. Just a thought. Wink Lol.

WEAR BIG SHOES TO THE AUDITION. If that fails, there's always LeFous. And, if you beat the Seniors. What's your competition? Find a song. scary song. Break A Leg!

I'd definitely say you'd have a shot at Lefou. At my sister's school Lefou was played by one of the sophomores I believe. And that's a role where being short is a GOOD thing.

But still try out for the others. Its good to put yourself out there and show interest. It may help you in years to come.

Thanks for the advice everyone Very Happy if my school does put this show on (or any show for that matter) I will be auditionning for sure. I love musical theatre, and plus it would even be a blessing to just be in a production of this calibur, and well of course how many people get to actually perform in the first show they ever saw? lol.

I'll keep you guys updated in whats happening when I find out more.

Thanks again for the advice Very Happy

Wow you are so lucky to be auditioning for one of my fave shows lol. I could see you as Lefou if you don't get the Beast. Good luck and keep us posted. Very Happy Applause

It's true that your height is a definite impediment, but you should still audition anyway. Even if you don't get the Beast, there are many other male roles to go for. And don't go in thinking that you're a freshman so you don't deserve to be there. That attitude isn't going to get you anywhere, and it's a pet peeve of mine. I was the lead in my high school's musical my freshman year, so I can tell you that your director would be very mistaken to exclude you just on those grounds. Obviously that doesn't mean to go around like you're better than everyone else, but you need to have confidence and consider yourself as worthy of auditioning and being cast as anyone else.

Really? What show? What role? Wink Lol, sorry to be so nosy, but that's really nifty! Judging from seeing my school's spring musicals for six years or so, I don't think that ever happens here... I think the best one can hope for getting a medium-sized role as a sophomore (like me, hehe). Razz

When my school did Oliver years ago, a freshman played Oliver.

Ah well, that really makes sense, though, doesn't it? Not to say that a freshman playing the lead in any other show wouldn't "make sense," but because Oliver is a kid, and the freshmen are the youngest... Right.

Vocally you may have the range for the role but my guess is that the role will probably go to a Senior especially since you are at a performing arts school. Alhtough anything could happen. I recieved a leading role my freshman year but then again I'm not at a performing arts school and I fit the profile for the role. My suggestion would be to go out there and have a really great time at the auditions and expect the role that you get becauase any role especially in Beauty and the Beast is awsome, even if it is in the chorus. It sounds like, however that you do have a really good shot at Lefou.

Current Role: Silly Girl #1, Napkin/Plate
Past Roles: Hermia "A Midsummer Night's Dream", Anne "The Diary of Anne Frank", Elaine Harper "Arsenic and Old Lace", Pepper, July, Annie "Annie", Brigitta "The Sound of Music", Dwarf, White Stag "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe", Alice "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", Rizzo "Grease"

A freshman is a student in the first-year class of a high school, also referred to as 9th grade. It's also applied to someone in their first year at a college/university. Very Happy
