Disney Songs for an audition?Hello! I was hoping to get some advice on the subject of audition songs- no, I'm not asking you to pick one for me or anything like that...
Our spring musical (yes, it's far away) is going to be Beauty and the Beast (obviously... ), and it is a high school production. They don't hold character specific auditions, just a general audition. I was wondering if it would be acceptable to sing a song from a Disney movie that was not made into a musical, as the musical style generally seems to be rather consistent. There probably isn't as much pressure on appropriate song choice (era, character, etc.) because this is a high school musical.

Well it's up to youI sang a disney song for my first audition (Annie). I got the part of Molly, but the director told me that from now on as a rule of thumb, "When auditioning for a musical use a song from a musical." However It's also a good idea never to use a song from the musical your auditioning for unless the director asks you to. Using a song from the musical makes some director feel that you are trying to say you are perfect for that role.
I'd suggest a song from seven brides for seven brothers, "bless your beautiful hide," try it.

Yes, I knew both of those rules, but I wasn't sure if they applied being that the Disney songs are basically the same both in movies and musicals. Oh well... I will definitely check out that song though! Thanks!

When auditioning for a Disney musical, it is perfectly fine to sing a Disney song, or a Disney-like song.
There is a very specific pop-mix sound that they are looking for when they are casting this, so singing a song like "Part of Your World" from Little Mermaid (which is coming Bway, BTW...), "Once Upon a December" from Anastasia, etc. is just fine.
For Annie, yes, it is a poor choice because that has a different sound to it...BUT for Beauty and the Beast, singing a song from another Disney movie/musical is fine!

Also songs from Cinderella work well too. R and H, not the disney version.
