Disney audition - what to sing?

Hi -- I got called for a Disney general audition in NYC in May, and it's kinda a big deal. I'm supposed to sing a contemporary piece, probably mix/belt, which I have plenty of, but I'd kinda like something that shows my personality. I looked through my book and it seems like all my contemporary stuff are power ballads.

I have Popular, which would show my personality, but of course that's completely overdone. Laughing And then I have older Cole Porter/Rodgers & Hart-ish stuff that shows personality, but nothing contemporary.

I'd love any suggestions! Thanks so much!

Disney audition

How about "Shy" or "Happily Ever After" from Once Upon a Mattress? Those are great to show personality!

I'm going in for that same call, and the "contemporary" has me kinda stumped. I'm thinking DON'T do a Disney song, but what is contemporary? within 5 yrs? 10? The only contemporay show I've done is Wild Party, totally inappropriate for disney. Confused Surely they would cringe at a Juke Box choice like Mama Mia or WWRY, being as how those are contemporary shows made up of REALLY OLD songs.

BTW I don't think Mattress would be considered contemporary.

I'm thinking I'll call them back and ask what yrs are considered contemporary. Actually i have to call anyway to confirm that I got the message about the 10 headshots.
whimsical

So glad to hear from someone hitting the same audition. Maybe I'll see you up there? Smile

It's quite funny about the headshots, actually...they've called me several times increasing the number of headshot/resumes I'd need...first it was "a few", then six, now 10. I guess that's a good sign? More people?

I'm guessing by contemporary they just mean somewhat recent...nothing like R&H or Loesser. I think I'm going to aim towards the typical Menken/Schwartz-ish belt/mix sound.
Chevstriss

also did they tell you we'd be dancing all day the next day? Wonder if Mrs Meers song is contemporary or is it from the movie? They are looking at me for femme villains.
Chevstriss

just talked to the CD and they want a song from w/ in the past 10 yrs.

1982 is not the last 10 yrs.
whimsical

Yes, they told me about the dance callback!

Hmm...last ten years...that narrows it down quite a bit. I think I might do a song from Big (perfectly fits criteria, yay!). Meers would definitely work for what they're looking at you for.

Howabout "Notice Me, Horton" from Seussical? It's very much a character song, though it sounds Disney-esque, and the middle section gives you a chance to belt it out.
Chevstriss

did they call you today and ask you to come in an hour early for paperwork?

they also said "its gonna be so crowded we're cutting it down to 16 bars". This really isn't sounding so good now. Brick wall Brick wall Brick wall Brick wall Brick wall Brick wall Brick wall
whimsical

Yeah, they called and told me about the paperwork and stuff, but not the 16 bars. Great. Sounding more and more like a cattle call. Ah well.

WILL THE MADNESS NEVER END? so after telling us we sing tues and dance all day wed, they sprung a dance combo on everyone, - no one had brought dance clothes or shoes. Lucky for me, I had decided to wear my jazz flats to walk to the train from my apt. so i just wore those and ACED that silly dance thing.

And now tomorrow we WON:T be dancing but reading from sides, doing a 2nd different monologue and learning a song?

oh well. I don't even WANT to work for disney. I just want to get into Dave's good graces.
whimsical

Chevstriss -- I think I saw you there -- and Dave asked you personally before your audition to do a monologue? The girls in our group and the one before us just sang.

Anyway, I'm going back tomorrow for Snow White sides and more singing. Woo.
Chevstriss

yeah only one other woman was asked for a mono - and she didn't sing or dance yesterday.

dunno what the deal w/ the Snow White stuff is - they were going to fire the entire cast, but then they turned around and re-signed every one of them - so there are no positions open.

Unless they are duplicating it in Hong Kong.
whimsical

Beats me. Hong Kong, eh? Laughing

I guess we'll see.

Hmm.. A big belting song is I Want More from the Vampire Lestat musical. Very catchy. And quite impressive, I guess if you can master it. If youre into having a song with a lot of personality, and can see past the vampiric antics of the song, you might like the bratty flow of it. Go to myspace.com/lestatthemusical to hear it. Then, I'm also thinkin..I dunno..a musical like Evita or Aida or whatever?
Chevstriss

OK well my callbacks were for Anaheim and the cruise line. I have no idea how long the contracts are for the cruise ships, but i have a house and a husband to look after and anything more than 6 mos. is outta the question
Chevstriss

checking out conditions on the ship I came across this. Scary.

i've always heard bad things about working at disney, though most of the people i know are interns and interns almost always have bad things to say about the place they work.
Chevstriss

no one I've been in contact w/ has heard anything since that big cattle call.
Jenko

best of luck to you!!! sounds fun, im jealous

I work for Disney!

I've worked for Disney for about a year, and I love it. I play Cinderella in most of the parades at Disney World in Orland. It's really fun. Of course I'm only 16 and I really don't care as long as I have a job. And of course my job consists of sitting in a lit-up coach with Prince Charming, so it's really not all that bad. Smile
Chevstriss

Orlando was the only Disney company not represented at this casting call. they work under a completely different contract and use a different casting director.

Rumor has it that the 2 differen't divisions don't even communicate.
