Discussion: Babette

This isn't a "what do I use to audition for Babs?" or a "CALLING ALL BABETTES!" thread, but you're welcome to post about that stuff.
Since we all love Babs, she needed a thread. Very Happy

I've been wondering lately why we love Babette. I can't decide.. why do you love her?

She's such a fun character and there can be so much depth found in her too. For such a small part, she's an incredible one. I'm sure my Babette+Lumiere expert whom I always refer to, LumBabsFan, will give a better explanation than I.

Also to Babs fans, LumBabsFan's fanfictions on FanFiction.net are good reads.

Yes LumBabsFan is quite the local MdN expert on anything Babette. Go to her, everybody, if you are interested in (and you should be!) truly getting an in depth feel for who Babette is. LumBabsFan helped me when I was getting ready to audition for Babette, and her tips and thoughts really helped.

I think everyone just loves Babette because she's just fun! Compared to all the "stuffy" roles in the musical: Belle, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts-while they are all still fantastic roles and an honor, privalege and just plain fun to play, they are considered, for some, to be the more serious roles-whereas Babette is pure fun, pure passion, pure sexy!

One of the reasons I like Babette is because the girl who played her in the production I was in was so darn nice! On the stage and off. I think the people who play the part really have an influence on what you think of the character (considering you were in a show with the character).

she's kinda sluttyif you ask me!

What's the in-depth in her, then?

I am currently in Beauty and the Beast and I am playing Babette and I couldn't imagine having this much fun in any other role. She is SO sexy, sassy, and just fun. I get a lot of laughs and playing off of Lumiere is probably my favorite part of it all. We have gotten applause after a couple of our scenes and our tango! I've got pictures....maybe I will put them up....

OH! And the stage make-up is always really fun for Babette. Really sexy! Smile

I'll try to explain this the best that I can, so bear with me here.

Babette is passionate, fiery and strong. She's not someone to insult or hurt lightly, she proves this in her first scene. The first time you see her, when Maurice comes to the castle, she and Lumiere have thier little fight over who's making who jealous. She tries to hurt and show Lumiere how she feels over his flirting with the other girls by flirting with Maurice. Then when Lumiere reflects on Veronique and how great she was, she is futher insulted and stomps off. Babette is insulted at the idea that Lumiere could think that she could be better than herself and that he wouldn't fully commit himself to her. Who does she come crying to when her hands turn to feathers? Lumiere. She truly loves him, but it is his nature to wander and so she uses her nature to keep a hold of him and to flirt in rebuttal when needed.

You see, she's just not some flirty featherduster. There's a why for everything anyone would do in a show. You just have to dig deep enough to find out that why. Even the smallest most boring character has a life.

Sometimes, I think the stuffy characters are more fun to play. Cogsy was a BLAST!

"Everyone has a story. No one's just a background, a sidekick, a piece of furniture in someone else's castle of life. It's just sometimes we don't look too closely, we don't try hard enough to see it. One can miss a lot by doing so, because the most precious things are difficult to see."
~ Writer Pennamed May Wormwood.

The indepth is sometimes what you don't see up onstage, but is there.

(I am very proud to say, btw, that even professionals have read and sanctioned the story as a great read.)

Everyone has practically summed up my interest in the character. What started as loving her because she was "Lumiere's girlfriend!" (Lumi being my favorite character since I was 7), has just turned into a great love and fun of delving into a character that doesn't get much stage and screen time.

She really is just FUN, and almost everything that I'm not, opposites attract, LOL. To a hobby fanfic writer like me, the fact that she doesn't have a lot of things explained about her makes her so much fun to explore! Not every character has to be indepth, or deep, and not every character has to have this grand sized role to be loved.

Babette is fun and full of life when played right; she always put a smile on my face. =)

Oh, and rytoast m'dear, I wouldn't call her slutty at all. She never charges, LOL. I'd call her instead a redblooded woman who knows how to get what she wants. Wink

Sigh....we closed our show last night and stuck the set. Sad

We normally do 5 shows for the run of our high school musical, but because we sold out every night but one, and had to turn down hundreds of people, we ended up putting on a 6th charity benefit performance. A good portion of the proceeds went to Hope House and Heart to Heart. Yay! That happened last night....and now, we really are done with the show. Sad It's a bittersweet feeling.

I'll miss playing Babette!

I know what you mean, about missing playing Babette. I am currently playing Mimi the Feather Duster (a role written specifically for me in the show by our director, i am Babette's sister. Please, guys, I know technically It's taking away some of the glory of Babette, but please don't comment on it. I'm just trying to post my feelings here!!!) and I often play off of our (adorable!!!!!!) Lumiere. He's my muse for this part. We work together and he's really what makes my job fun. So I understand how playing Babette must feel, and I would despise having to give that role up after a long, (fun!) run of the show. Laughing
