Discussion: 2 curious questions1. Who do you think would have gone to the Heaviside Layer if Grizabella hadn't shown up or was forgiven?
2. Deutronomy probably knew Grizabella from before she left the Jellicles. But what do you think thier relationship was? Father/Daughter, friends, Mates, Siblings, ect....

1) Gus. He deserves it most - but then I have a cat who is very, very like Gus so it's very personal for me!
2) Grizabella and Deutoronomy - friends, I think, no more...

QuestionsI tend to agree with Belle on this one...
For explanation, Gus had lived a full life, and can now only remember rather than perform on the stage. Most of the characters we see still have a considerable amount of Life to live yet, but Gus is nearing his "Last Bow". I figure that of the characters, he deserves the Choice...

I also agree with Gus. Everyone else seems to have some purpose in the tribe, and something left to do--my second choice for this answer was Jennyanydots, but she still has work left to do. Gus, on the other hand, is no longer acting, and seems to have taught much of his wisdom and advice to Jellylorum. His legacy is ensured.
As to the other question, I hear a lot of people say Griz and Deut were mates, but I think Deut is far older(or perhaps not so much older as more mature) than that. Grizabella left the tribe somewhere between young adulthood and the prime of her life, and I think she's not even as old as Jennyanydots.

Before you skip this answer because I'm answering Gus, just let me say that my reason is completly different from the other's so far. Here's why Gus would have been choosen: 1. Old D. would have picked someone who's lived a full life - i.e. someone old. Only he and Gus are very old, Skimble and Jenny still young enough to dance and have a good time. 2. He wouldn't have choosen himself. He's too generous for that. He looks after his tribe, and so he'd choose Gus, by process of elimination.

Well obviously no one can be sure, but I personnally think that they were siblings or friends or aquaintances. There's nothing personal or loving about it when Old D. hugs her and leads her to the stairway to the Heavyside Layer; he's only accepting her and welcoming her back, not acting at all like he'd missed her all that much. There's nothing there that says mate or daughter. Even sibling might be a stretch, but then again, I'm pretty impersonal with my brother, so it may be possible. Yeah. That's my two cents.

I also think that Gus would have been next in line to be sent up to the Heaviside, for the reasons mentioned above.
I think Grizabella and Old Deuteronomy would have merely have had a leader/tribe member relationship. If Deut was so old, presumably he would still have been leader when Grizabella left, so in my opinion his relationship to her is very similar to his relationship to the rest of the tribe - a paternal leader.

1. Put me on the Gus bandwagon for this one, and for the record, I've seen several Gus performers who are so convincing (Sir John Mills in the DVD, John Dewar on Broadway) that I almost wished they'd stop the show and let Gus go instead of Grizabella.
2. I think that Griz and Old D were just friends, but a long time ago, I think they did have a litter together, one of whom was the Rum Tum Tugger, and shortly after, Griz left the tribe because she didn't want a family (hence the Tugger's hostility towards her in the DVD).
