Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Who loves it? Never seen it, but the music is amazing!
LesWickedPhantom

*raises hand* I love it.

Seeing this show, I had never laughed so hard, or so long, in my entire life. I was delirious. and you will never truly know how great it is just from listening to the cast recording-it doesn't do it justice. I'm going to cry when Norbert leaves
fender_outta_hock

I love the score but wonder if, in seeing it, it is as good if you've already seen the movie, and thus know the plot beforehand?
lizheartsu

I wish they would make a new movie with the original broadway cast....

I've seen both (though I didn't see the movie til after I saw the musical... actually, the movie happened to be playing on tv when i got home from seeing the musical that night...), but IMO, they add just enough to the musical to keep those who have seen the movie just as entertained as those who are new to the story. The only way someone would not enjoy this show would be if they were the Worlds Biggest Party Pooper, and therefore should be punished...though I hope it wont get that far...
what_the_heck013

Love the movie.
Love the show.
Love the score.
LOVE the actors (a.k.a. The Last Five Years reunion)
Love love love.
Salome

Brilliant show! ..Lithgow is perfection! can't beat him! Butz is hysterical,Gettlfinger REALLY left me wanting more of her! Gleason and Jbara are adorable together!

Wonderful films..both of them..the Caine/Martin film is slighly better IMO.
LesWickedPhantom

Do you guys think they might, with this new trend, eventually make a new musical-movie out of DRS in a few years? Personally, I would like to see this, but only on the condition that they do as Rent did and get the ENTIRE original cast back... Norb, and John at least. it wouldn't be right without them, IMO.
what_the_heck013

Of course I believe they will do DRS:The movie musical--Right after "The Three Amigos-The Musical" and "Young Frankenstein-The Musical".
MrsJamieWellerstein

I can see a DRS moviemusical. There'd need to be a Steve Martin cameo, though.

Three Amigos, I dont' know, but there was a rumor for a while that Brooks was working on Young Frankenstein: The Musical shortly before the death of Anne Bancroft.
LesWickedPhantom

*tear* I was reading the newspaper today, and there's already an advertisement for Lithgow's Leaving and Pryce's Coming.

sorry. that was so random...
what_the_heck013

Just out of curiousity... To all you DRS fans, what is your least favorite song?
MrsJamieWellerstein

I like all of them...but if I HAD to pick a least favorite, it would probably be Chimp in a Suit. A little on the boring side to me.
LesWickedPhantom

many of the songs aren't really anything special if you just go by the cast recording. It's not something like Les Mis or Phantom, where the music is beautiful by itself. Songs like "All About Ruprecht", "What Was A Women To Do?" and "Give Them What They Want" could never be fully appreciated unless seen staged. Although it's not really the case with all of the songs, ie "Love Is My Legs" , "Here I Am" and "Great Big Stuff", which are good on their own.

all this is just IMO, though. I don't even know if I'm making sense.

but to actually answer the question, I have to agree with the above... "Chimp In A Suit", although come quirky, witty lyrics, really didn't do much for me, even when I saw the show, except for the little parts where Norbert ran in and out.
Salome

I feel that "chimp in a Suit" is one of the shows best numbers. and really highlights the wonderful Greg Jbara. next ot All About Ruprecht,Oklahoma and Like Ziz Like Zat..its my favorite.
what_the_heck013

Yes, I too like "Chimp in a Suit". I was surprised that more people didn't say "Great Big Stuff". It really just doesn't do much for me and is rather annoying.
lizheartsu

Give them what they want is a little on the boring side for me, but I like it.
NoOneMournsTheWicked

I love Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. My favourite song's 'What Was A Woman To Do?', but I also really like 'Great Big Stuff', 'Oklahoma?', 'Nothing Is Too Wonderful To Be True', and 'Love Is My Legs'.

I was just blown away by the whole show, it was amazing.
Mr_X

I'm only taking this from listening to the cast recording, so it may be a little off.

Favorites:
"Great Big Stuff"-Saw it at the Tony's and loved it, especially Butz's, "And the whole thing revolves!"
"Love is My Legs"-Grew on me. Reminded me of those nonsensical country songs.
"Dirty Rotten Number"-Two great guys just belting it all out there. Amazing.

Least Favorite:
"The Reckoning"-If I had to choose one, this would be it. The only thing I like is the Ensemble doing the background music, it seems weird going from a reprise of "Nothing is Too Wonderful..." to that oh so predictable moment when you know Lithgow is gonna be the doctor.

I'm sure I'll appreciate "All About Ruprecht" and "Give Them What They Want" once I see them on stage, I still can't imagine Butz humping Lithgow. But such a great show and such a great season for theatre.

Yes, you MUST go see it. Even if it is no longer OBC.
cabaretfreak

Great show! I got tickets in the back row, but it was awsome. I saw it right after it openned. It was awsome! My favorite number is The More We Dance. The dancing was great and lights lit up my world.

The show was so funny! I remember hearing my laugh echo through the Imperial Theater. (I have a loud laugh)

At the Macy's parade, they changed a lot of the lyrics of Great Big Stuff and it really destroyed the song. I can understand why, but there are other "clean" songs that could have done.
LesWickedPhantom

anybody have the lyrics to the clean version, or an example of how it was changed? because I was stupid enough to forget to watch the Parade this year. my theatre-hating brother even saw it, and didn't tell me. jerk.
cabaretfreak

They took out the swear words, and repaced them with "clean" words like junk instead of s****, or they took out a** and replaced with nose. The words chosen didn't quite fit into tempo and they sort diluted Buntz's role. I would have liked to see Here I Am because it is such a great number, or Rüffhousin' Mit Shüffhausen, because it is so funny and features all the leads.
what_the_heck013

Yes, "Here I Am" is my favorite number in the show.
Christine_Colgate

OMMMG i love the show.. sooo much.. i saw it twice in NYC.. and there is a tour on its way too so that should be fun. i heard the jonathon pryce is really actually good as john lithgows replacement. yes there should be a musical movie redone of DRS and use the OBC that would totally rock.

i can agre the chimp in a suit is boring but omg when norbert flashes the audience during it.. it hysterical beyond belief. i had the privelege to sit in the front row (score i got the tix early) and nobert wa slike smiling at me becuase i was liek cracking up so hard and i was the first one to give them a standing ovation at curtain calls.

omg it is such a good show. my favorite songs are great big stuff, love is my legs and all about ruprechts. among many other favorite songs.
NathenDetroit741

Funniest Broadway Show EVER! The best I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot it's between this and Rent, but This one is a little better I thought, just because it's more upbeat, it's funny, and extremly clever.

If I had to pick a least favorite, I would probably say "Oklahoma" The song really has nothing that attracts me, I thing the singing is great, and it's funny, but the music is a little to be desired, and I'm just not crazy about it. Second I would have to say "All About Ruchpret" I saw it and it was hystarical on stage, but the song gets annoying after hearing it over and over. I favorite with out a doubt is "Dirty Rotten Number" and "Give Them What They Want" John Lithgow is just amazing, too bad he's leaving.
Mr_X

Oh man, I saw this on Thursday, Freddy Benson is added to the list of characters I'm auditioning for once I finish college. Honestly, I love that part and I really loved the show. Joanna Gleason had a lot of great comic timing, though I didn't like her hair compared to ITW. Gregory Jbara was so great as Andre, really brought life to a supporting character. We had an understudy, Jason Gillman, for Norbert, but Jason was still hilarious and I liked him because he looked more like me. The girl who replaced Sherie was pretty good, not as much of a belter as she was though. Jonathan Pryce was great, had the perfect charm and charisma for the show. I got his autograph and it's only when I got home and my mom and aunt started freaking out did I realize how famous he was.
LesWickedPhantom

if you liked it, you'd love it 100x more with Norbert.
rockyrocks666

my fav song is 'here i am' i cant get enough of it. its so upbeat and makes me wanna dance around. lol
Amber

I went with Christine_Colgate in December. Front row. AWESOME.

Ok, I thought Norbert Leo Butz was so good, I was falling out of my seat (not really, but I was laughing quite a bit) during Great Big Stuff and All About Ruprecht. And Ruffhousin' mit Schuffhausen. He totally deserved the Tony Award, and it was a privilege being able to see him. I saw John Lithgow's and Sherie Rene Scott's understudies who were both brilliant. Joanna Gleason was great, and it was a THRILL to see that amazing woman perform live. Gregory Jbara was great as Andre. I rather liked "Chimp In A Suit" but I must say I didn't like it UNTIL I saw it on stage. Sara Gettelfinger's Jolene Oakes was hysterical and I only wish she had a bigger part in the show, but what she was given, she made the most of. "Oklahoma?" was nearly a showstopper. And the chorus was awesome, great dancers, wonderful singers. Oh, and something HAS to be said for the set design. It was very well-done. I like when sets have mechanical or moving set pieces (floors and such)...And the lighting was good. Everything was awesome.

The show was great, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants to have a good time at the theatre. Not one for the kids (too adult and risque at some points), but anyone else would have a blast going to see this show. I'll be going to see the touring cast. Whenever the tour starts and makes its way to my neck of the woods.

WOW..are you nuts?? All about Ruprecht" and "Oklahoma' are the two best numbers in the whole show. brilliant songs, brilliant performances .
LesWickedPhantom

I have to add that seeing DRS was the most fun I've ever had on Broadway. Comic brilliance.
RacerX

eh...

I thought the show was pretty so-so. Norbert Leo Butz was the ish; it was obvious why he won the Tony but Mr. Pryce wasn't all that great, BUT his role was more like a set-up role to Butz rather than a stand-alone part. I saw Rachel York who was just great; her voice was wonderful as well as her personality.

The chorus was absolutely hideous; those people need new jobs.

They changed them for the Tonys too! I thought it was pretty funny actually- the audience definitely appreciated it anyway.
I can see why they used Great Big Stuff- I've never seen the show onstage, but it's the typical "I WANT!" number, just as Defying Gravity was at the Tonys the year before. It's big, it's funny, and entertaining- and aside form anything else, it will definitely encourage people to see the show, ift hey haven't already. For the sake of a couple of lyrics? I would choose it too.
I actually don't understand the relevance of Oklahoma in the show. Can someone who has seen it give me a bit of a synopsis? I found one that was fairly detailed, but it didn't even mention Oklahama...
Nicely-Nicely

Well basically a rich swindeler, Lawerence Jameson, (who was played by Lithgow) and a petty theif, Freddy Benson, (currently played by Butz) make a bet that they can embezzle 50 grand from a girl Christine Colgate. Whoever loses the bet has to leave town because the French Rivera is just too small for two cons.
"Oklahoma" comes into play when Lawerence and Freddy kind of first meet... which is after "Great Big Stuff." Lawerence has an obsessed girl who he conned into making her think that he was a prince. She won't leave until he goes home with her to Oklahoma... which is how the song begins. After that him and Freddy team up so they can get rid of the girl.
So that's basically why Oklahoma song is in the show. I do agree with whoever said this... "It is a pointless song."
It's a funny one though.
Salome

and Sarah Gettlefinger brings down the house with that number..she is such an enormous talent!

I agree, she was fantabulous. Then again, so was the entire original cast.
Nicely-Nicely

Couldn't agree with yo more.
Nicely-Nicely

I do have to say though... I disagree with whoever said Oklahoma and All About Rupert were the best songs. They were funny and... good. NOT GREAT! The good songs in my opinion is Great Big Stuff, Love is my Legs, and Dirty Rotten Number.

see..love is my legs is okay..but not one of the strongeast songs in the show. I like Great Big Stuff quite a bit but its just under "ruprecht? "oklahoma" and "giving em what they want" in my book.
Nicely-Nicely

Now I'll agree, "Giving Em What They Want" is a GREAT number!
