dinadin and mordredso we are doing camelot at my highschool and i was positive i would have mordred
I did so well and i was the best for it ( in all honesty without trying to be conceded) im just an upperclassmen and this was my time
Turns out another kid ( who did ok but not to well ) got it because of our looks ( im 5 10 with black hair, he's about 5 8 or 9 with red)
my director said he had a fiery look about him
THE ORIGINAL MORDRED HAD BLACK HAIR
... and besides couldnt i just die my hair... thats a bs reason
anyway im stuck with the very small role of dinadin and im very upset about that
my best friend is guenevere- so i will stand in her shadow again ( as i did when we did West Side Story as freshmen and she was Maria)
anyway.. if anyone can enlighten me at all or cheer me up id appreciate it...

It's hard when you lose a role to someone else, esp. when you feel your audition was better. It's happened to me often enough. There must have been something the other fellow had that struck a chord with the director, otherwise he wouldn't have been chosen. That's not to say that you did badly, however. Will your production include 'Take Me to the Fair'? If so, Dinadan has a solo, albeit a short one. Consider this, too: it takes talent to stand out with so little time in the spotlight, and perhaps the director felt you had the ability to do it better than the other guy.
When you say 'the original Mordred', I take it you're referring to Roddy McDowell on Broadway? Yes, his hair was dark, but that wouldn't have mattered, really. It was the performer's ability that counted, not the color of his hair.
I know it's a cliche, but there are no small parts, just small actors. Every role is there for a reason, so every role is important. Without the background characters, the leads wouldn't have a reason for existing, so Dinadin is still important.
Your time will come. Mine did; I *finally* got a chance to play Domina in '...Forum' a couple years ago; now I'm looking forward to doing some G&S at long last.
BTW, many moons ago, a Mexican production of 'My Fair Lady' counted Placido Domingo amongst its chorus members. Where is he now? Only one of the biggest operatic tenors of the time!!
Good luck, and let us know how rehearsals progress!!

at least Dinidan gets to be the main vocalist in the wonderful "Guenevere' song.

no dinadin doesnt have the guenevere solo she gave it to lionel who was better for lancelot but the lancelot we have was "playing the game" so he got it .. she tried giving it to him as a consolation prize
anyway rehearsals start tomorrow
i cant look at the script long or i get sick about this show
rehearsal everynight> i am not looking foward to this
thanks for the consoling i know its just one part and just highschool
but in our highschool the show is a big deal
and everyone says to look at the big picture and that this one show wont matter which may be true... but for now and for the 3 month rehearsal period
its everything
ugh ive tried to move past it
and it sucks cuz i know this should not be that important its killing me that a show can do this to me
a show never has before... oh well

ohh and as for the whole looks thing
i know most of the time unless a cast list specifically calls for a certain look- looks dont really matter
the only reason i said that was because thats the only reasoning she has given me
- he looked creepier
im not blaming it on the way i look i know it must be somehting else- i was just so sure it was gonna be me so i have no idea why its not

I know it hurts, but with luck it will get better as rehearsals proceed. At least you're in the show. When I was in high school, I never got cast in *any* role, no matter how good my audition was. What can I tell you? On the other hand, if you stick it out, there's always the chance that roles will need to be re-cast for one reason or another. One local group had to re-cast Beast and one other role in 'Beauty and the Beast' less than a week before they opened because the performers were involved in a car accident. Not that I wish anyone that kind of drastic bad luck, but you never can tell.
Keep us posted!!
