Difficult dilemma.

Two auditions are coming up during the first week of December - "Joseph" at my high school and "Wizard of Oz" at the community theater. Since my school is tiny and the theater department is dying anyway, I know I'll be 1/3 of the narrator in "Joseph" (I hate when directors split the role...).

At the community theater, I'm really not sure what my odds are, but I do live in a small city where the entire theater base is made up of about seventy people. The thing is, that director is notorious for casting people who are too old for the role and/or related to someone important. BUT Dorothy has been my dream role since I was little, and everyone I know is encouraging me to audition - except for my school director, of course.

If I get cast as anything but Dorothy in "Wizard of Oz" I will have to turn it down. I'll feel awful, but I also can't let my school group down - there are truly four people with any talent at all, and only ten or so others that might consider auditioning for "Joseph."

So... what on earth should I do? I would love to do both, but there is no way due to scheduling. Oh, if it helps, I'm sixteen (will be seventeen by the time rehearsals start), brunette, average height and weight, and a soprano with a strong lower range.

Go ahead and audition for both and see what happens. As long as you put on your audition form for the Wizard of Oz that you wouldn't be able to accept a role other than Dorothy (or let them know in some other way), then it's fine. Don't stress about it, community theater groups are generally understanding about this sort of thing.

That helps, thanks.

Audition for both and see what happens...

If you don't get Dorothy explain that you've got more stuff at school taking place. If you do get Dorothy explain to your school that you'd be willing to be in Joseph and let them know when you're Oz rehearsals are so they can see if they schedule around you.

You shouldnt really limit youreself to that degree that its one part or nothing. Even if youre not get the part youre dreaming about you always have the experience and if nothing else chance to get the conection and reputation that might one day give you the dream part.

I'd definitely audition for both. Once you know what sort of role both places have to offer you, you can make an informed decision. Smile

I don't agree about not making it 'all or nothing' about WoO.

I'm currently in 2 shows; Little Shop of Horrors as Chiffon (very big deal of a production) and a pantomime where I am not a lead but am a big supporting role, I get to sing a lot and have a really good amount of stage time. Literally the only way I would have done the panto would have been if I'd got cast as what I am, or as a lead- because anything smaller than that and it wouldn't be worth me killing myself for the shows.

I am currently in rehearsal 5 out of 7 days in the week from now till Christmas. Plus working full time and studying. Shocked But- I would have regretted not doing either of the shows so it will be worth it!

The 6 hour rehearsal today kind of wiped me out though!
