Different

I was listening to the song DIFFERENT and it sounded silly because Jane is trying to communicate with Tarzan, trying to tell him her name.

TARZAN: Tarzan

JANE: Tarzan. Jane.

TARZAN: Tarzan. Jane.

JANE: Oh, no, no, no! Jane.

TARZAN: Oh, no, no, no! Jane.

JANE: Oh, no. You're Tarzan and I'm Jane Porter

TARZAN: Oh, no. You're Tarzan and I'm Jane --

JANE: No! Tarzan. Jane.

TARZAN: Tarzan, Jane.

So after all that discussion of how Tarzan can't really speak, he goes on to sing DIFFERENT, with total ease!!
I know that it would be almost impossible to have a musical where the lead cannot talk, but it just sounded really funny to me!
I can see what Jane is trying to do, though. I can guess that the actions on stage are probably Jane pointing to herself when she says Jane and to Tarzan when she says Tarzan. It's just what happens after that. The whole point is that we the audience learns that there are some communicational problems, and then Tarzan sings without any diffculty what so ever!!

PS/ I realize that the dialogue above is probably incorrect, as I am just going from memory!
The Drama Queen

"Different" is sung as though it's what Tarzan is thinking, so we as audience members can hear him, but Jane can't. When he talks to Terk and Kalaand the other apes, he's speaking in their language, and eventually he learns to speak english while talking to Jane and Porter.

Ohhh. So after the little bit of dialogue, is it a pre-recorded version of Tarzan singing, or is he actually singing?
The Drama Queen

He's acutally singing, but he kind of walks away from Jane when he does.

Oh, I see. It just sounded so weird on the OBCR.
calliope1982

It's called suspension of disbelief.

How else is the audience supposed to know what's going on. Don't think of Tarzan singing in English when he doesn't know it. It's not supposed to be English, it just is so you can understand it. Haven't you ever seen the cartoon? Little Tarzan speaks English and so do the apes. He doesn't actually learn english til much later in the movie.

Oh yeah, I never really thought about the apes in the movie.
BelleCinderella

TARZAN: Tarzan!
JANE: Tarzan! Oh, I see.
TARZAN: Tarzan! Oh, I see.
JANE: Oh, no, no, no , no... I'm Jane.
TARZAN:Oh, no, no, no , no... I'm Jane.
JANE: Oh dear, no. I'm Jane Porter.
TARZAN: Oh dear, no. I'm Jane--
JANE: Stop! Tarzan. Jane.
TARZAN: Tarzan. Jane.
JANE: Exactly.

That's one of my favorite scenes in the show.
zeppy1223

It's one of my favorite scenes as well.
I believe that at this part.. I was the one person in the audience who laughs hysterically for a long time about one simple thing... the person everyone gets annoyed with. Wink
DONT.LOOK.BACK

i also love this scene josh did it in such a funny way and everytime he did it differently and as it got toward the end of its run he just let himself do it more crazy.
