Different Ways to Play Beadle

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3966452/1/

I read this fanfiction and was intrigued. What do you think is the most believable idea of the Beadle? The one you would like to see? Any of them so absurd that you laughed out loud?

Anyone else find this interesting?
Orestes Fasting

Interesting. I'd always thought of the Beadle as a less powerful but more inherently evil foil for the Judge: he might not take the initiative, but it's his influence that gives Turpin the validation he needs to let his baser instincts win out over his conscience--and unlike the Judge, the Beadle has no remorse. Not only does he completely miss Turpin's moral struggle over what to do about Johanna, he sees absolutely nothing wrong with forcing her into marrying her guardian.

I find the Beadle to be something of a blank slate, in the script, save for two portions (the "hugging and kissing" his daughter part, and his attempts to intimidate Anthony). It seems the actual character is dependent upon the actor.

Well, in the film, Timothy Spall played him as a mean, oily man, the Judge's sidekick and and a suckup. In the Hearn-Lansbury Film, the Beadle was less of a sidekick and more of a right-hand man...that is he was mean, dispicable man, but more independant of the Judge, instead of being his lost puppy, his clique, he was his partner in crime. And when I saw Benjamin Eakley in the revival tour, he was younger, leaner and better looking, not the usual fat and pompous Beadle or Spalls dirty, oily character. He was very suave, but cruel too...

See you can play the beadle as if he's being mean to win Turpin's favour, or as if it's how he is, not how he wants to impress the Judge...and you can toss in as much pompasity or suaveness as you wish to create your own interpretation.

The man who plays him currently in the revival tour is probably my favorite non-traditional interpretation...it reminded me a lot of an Itlalian Mofia Hitman. He was sauve, handsome, yet obviously dark and twisted.

yes! that's what i was going to say.
I absolutely loved him, way different then any beadle i've seen before.
not to mention he was pretty damn hot too.

Yes, that was Benjamin Eakley who I mentioned in my earlier post...you guys are exactly right. He's a suave, dark, twisted hitman type...and yes he is unusually good-looking for a Beadle...I just wish hedn't have to have his back to the audience so much during the show XD (Abnd I loved how he shone the flashlight down Judy Kaye's dress...XP

The way I see it, Benjamin Eakley was the Villain, Timothy Spall was the Psychophant (with a touch of Villain in there) and the Beadle in the Hearn movie (forget his name at the moment) was a mix of Sycophant and Innocent, leaning more towards Sychophant

Now I'm gonna have a hard time to think what is best now since I'm now the beadle.

Calvin Remsburg (sp?) was Bamford in the '82 touring production.
