Difference between Drama and Acting?

Is there one?

According to me friend's Bebo, they are two different things.

Confused

It's confused me a lot.

My drama teacher is very opinionated about this, with very good points. I'll try to paraphrase.

Her opinion is that Drama is people essentially playing themselves in different situations. Obviously, they are usually highly dramatic situations. For example, when you see plays, and it's a bunch of kids screaming at each other. That's what she associates with drama (I wouldn't take it that far, myself, however I do agree with it being more about people playing themselves on stage).

On the other hand, Acting is playing a character different from yourself, and focusing on that character and the themes it presents. It's more about finding the real emotion within the character, and not just a bunch of people yelling at each other.

However, it really just depends on connotation, and the person discussing whether or not there is a different. Most of the time, people just say drama or acting without even thinking about the different, but there are those select few who are very uptight about the difference.

Come to think of it, that does make perfect sense.

Especially the playing yourself / someone different thing.

you make it sound like she's saying drama is a bunch of kids yelling at eachother...

I think what she's saying is that Drama is more about exaggerating your personal characteristics on stage while Acting is about embodying another character. Am I right?

huh? Drama is a noun, which refers to the art form, it's history, application, influence. Most people distiguish Drama from Comedy. There are Comedic Dramas sometimes tho.

after all, isn't she the drama teacher?

Acting is a verb form, which in this case means "assuming the role of another" usually for an audience.

That's what she says, yeah. I don't think she should take it so far (she really disrespects "drama"), but she makes a good point.
