Did you know?

That the "unlimited" Melody in Wicked (Unlimited, my future is...) is Actually the first eight notes of somewhere over the rainbow, just in a different rythm? I thought that was cool, and how it was the reacurring melody that brings the whole play together, very cool.
Luc

Wow! That's so cool! Thanks!!
Baker

Yes.

They also reference the Miss Gulch theme right after As Long As You're Mine when Elphaba sees the tornado coming. I think there's another musical reference to The Wizard of Oz somewhere too but I don't remember where.
SapphireNight

That is amazing! I never realised that!
I dont quite know what you mean, Baker, but then again, I've never seen the whole show. Ive seen a lot of it on various clips on Youtube.

You're right! That's so cool!

I know a few people here aren't big fans of Wicked - but you need to give Steven Shwartz credit - it takes sombody really talented to take a classic song like "Over the Rainbow" and change the rhythm to give you an entirely different peice of music, and make it sound like his own original work. Now that's talent.

Yeah...Webber's made a million dollar career out of doing just that!

yeah, agreed....

But am I one of a few people on this earth who like Webber's work?

One more

Yes, and after composing music for two of the longest running musicals on Broadway, Webber is laughing all the way to the bank...

I believe it has been said that all musical composers, past and present, use music from other sources for their own. Webber is not the only one in musical theatre to do this, and he will not be the last...

You can tell cause this thread is about Schwartz doing it...
Azaelia

Yeah, the tone is similar, if you listen to it for a split second. The beginnings of both also have an ensemble that match up for a bit, too - the way it's set up, you almost expect to hear "No One Mourns the Wicked!" But you have to be looking for it... in my case, I was doing a research paper on "the versions of Oz," so I was doing a lot of comparing and contrasting. Wink

I believe the other reference is at the very end when the Scarecrow enters. The music there sounds similiar to "If I Only Had A Brain".

You're right! I just watched a video on youtube to make sure, and it definitely does sound like a slower version of the beginning of "If I Only Had A Brain."

It's cool, yes. It's clever, in some sort of ways. In terms of talent, don't base your claims on it.

I know Meredith Wilson did that a lot in The Music Man. Look at 76 Trombones and Goodnight, My Someone.
