Did this happen to anyone else

Alright so I am 16 and I was an AMAZING singer and could sing Soprano really well. Then after my 1st play (Music Man 7th Grade) when I was the highest one in the Quartet my voice changed Sad Then the next year I was in Bye Bye Birdie and the lowest in the Qaurtet haha ironic eh? But now I cant sing well. Is this because my voice still hasn't settled? just wondering b/c I will be mad if I can't ever be in a Broadway Musical.

In my years of choir, I was a first (highest) soprano all through Middle School, and my Freshman year of HS. Now, a sophomore, I've been put into the highest ranking choir in my school, but as a first Alto. I was disappointed at first, but I really like it better. And next year I've been told that I'm needed in Second Alto, so I'm excited. My upper range ain't what it used to be, but now I've got some pretty killer low notes, that even make my voice teachers/choir director giddy. But I still refer to myself as a Mezzo though.
I'm not the most knowledgable when it comes to voice study, but I'm 16, the same age as you, and my voice has also changed quite a bit. Give it some time, because it may be that your voice is still settling. and just keep practicing.

Lucky I can't even do Alto I am like LOWWWWWWWWWWW lol

Hmmm... I did the opposite, I was a 2nd Alto in 7th grade, and by a Freshman in College I was singing first Soprano.

I was probably a soprano way before then, but my conductors would place me with the altos/2nd sopranos because I had a strong voice and I could lead the others. This may be what is happening to you. It will help you quite a bit if you go with it (unless it really strains to get down there). I got spoiled with going with the melody for a few years, and now I have to sing in a septet as a middle low singer. It's hard now!

I was also a first soprano all thru grad school, and even in choir in high school. Although I started taking private voice lessons in high school for 2 years, and I really strengthen my belt, but lost my upper range. I could still hit the notes, they just didn't sound as good as they used to. I have been able to build up strength again, but nothing like the power I have when I'm belting. I was always curious about that.

That's exactly what happened to me. I always got the Alto/2nd Soprano roles and sections through Middle school and early high school. I actually only moved into 1st Soprano because my choir was short on firsts the middle of my Sophomore year. And then I just got stuck there Wink

I think you're voice is probably definitely (I know those two words make no sense together, but go with me) changing. If you're worried about losing your upper register, get with a voice coach who can slowly stretch your octave range. I'm sure your voice isn't lost, perhaps just stagnant in a more comfortable range or naturally changing and deepening.

Whatever your voice part ends up being, live it up! I love that I'm able to switch between 2nd and 1st Soprano parts (and even dabble in some 1st Alto) when I feel like it. It sounds like you'll be a mighty good 2nd Alto/1st Tenor if your singing is actually as low as your saying. Some of the best singers I know are throaty Altos. Embrace your voice! Smile

Yeah.. i am still kind of having this problem too.

Since third grade id always been a first soprano. Always singinig the high descant-y parts...always the highest.
Through freshman year.... its always been that way.
then last year.. i asked my teacher if i could be an alto..just for the fun of it. even though it was in my top choir. i can sing both ranges, just soprano sounds better.

so first semsester i sang second alto (thats right..she didnt just put me as an alto..as a SECOND alto.. weird..huh...but she said my voice actually sounded more mature lower)
yeah, then second semester of last year.. i sang second soprano.

i can still sing all the parts. but i dont know what my teacher is going to do now.

I'm a sopralto ^^x as I like to call it. I began my singing career low, low, low (sometimes singing tenor). Then my director cast me in "Company" (with the "Bless this day!" solo) and I ended up being a soprano ^^x lol life is funny.

I was never a great singer, but I used to be able to sing okay with some songs. Now... when I sing, it's not really that great because I don't practice. Also, my voice never developed well anyway - talking, I sound about ten years old, even though I'm twenty one. So singing, I sound about ten as well. Rolling Eyes Not fun!

Would you perhaps be referring to a Prima Donna?? Laughing

Hmmm... I went the opposite way! I always had the lowest voice when I was in primary school, even probably up to about year 8. My range below middle C was really good. Now I'm a really high soprano. And I'm slowly losing my low notes!! (help!)
mtgirl118

I used to be a legit soprano when I was 8-11.
Now I am a mezzo soprano with a strong belt. I'm 13.

I used to sing 1st sop, all through school, now I am singing 2nd sop and covering alto where needed (my am-dram society has a severe lack of altos) Although I can still get up to a top D (on the leger lines) when needed. (ala Amazing Gertrude LOL) I just can't get lower than the G below middle C.
I suppose my range hasn't really changed much, but the tone of my voice has got darker and richer as I've got older.
Always been able to belt well, with a high break (C-C#above middle C)
May bullen

my voice has always been, and probobly will always be, the highest voice almost any chior. I never used to be able to belt, however but when my voice changed (after almost a year when I could harldy sing at all) my belt developed and is now the strongest part of my voice.
I have a freind, though, who sang Amahl in Amahl and the Night Visitors last year, (yes, it's opera, yes it's possably the most annoying show on the face of the earth, and yes, I was in it.) which starts on a G, and her voice has changed this year, so she's singing Snoopy in Charlie Brown... in the original octive.
Just wait it out, but keep working your voice, even if it's just singing in a chior.
