David Hasslehoff

For the love of God, who the hell casted Hasslehoff as Jekyll/Hyde?! His acting is awful, and his singing is dreadful.

My God, what an awful, awful stain on Musical Theater history.
Ghost

Ok, I'll admit. It was me.

first of..its Cast not casted.

2nd J&H is a terrible stain on musical theatre with or without Hasselhoff. Hasselhoff just made it worse.

Lol, I loved the Hoff's version, but that's only because it was so bad, it was good. I mean, he sucked, but he did such a good job of sucking, I almost began to belive he was good. It takes real skill to do that.

I must first admit that my only experience with this show is seeing the Hasselhoff DVD and hearing the Original Broadway Cast recording.
I thought the Hasselhoff production was one of the worst things I have ever seen, absolutely! He didn't have nearly a strong enough voice to carry that part, let alone the acting skills. Very painful to watch. What is so scary is that people actually paid money to see this piece of garbage (including me, for buying the DVD), and the poor guy deluded himself into thinking he was good!

The show itself moves SO slow and so much of the music sounded the same. The only songs I have enjoyed on the recording are "In His Eyes" and "A New Life".

I did enjoy the staging of the show in the space it was performed.

Would I ever pay to see this show again, not likely.

1) grammah n spelln naazi lol

2) I disagree. Jekyll and Hyde has loads of bull crap songs, but there are a couple good ones in there. Anyone who goes to a Wildhorn show knows that they are in for a campy, laughable experience. I love Wildhorn's shows BECAUSE they're so bad.
Salome

scarlet pimpernel isnt bad.....its actually the opposite..a well written show with 3 or 4 crappy songs.
Jekkienumber24601

Well more like 2 crappy songs. I love Civil War! but that doesn't even have a book to be crappy. Jekyll has great songs. The chorus numbers are lame. The Ballad of Jekyll and Hyde which was on a demo of the show but never in a production was an awesome song. So much better than Facade or Murder Murder. For the most part Jekyll's numbers make the show and they should cut back on Lucy's a little (I never liked A new life or no one knows who I am) Dialgoue can replace the latter and the former can be cut entirely.
Sweeney Hyde

The songs I listen to most from the show are Lost in the Darkness, Facade, Alive! (and the reprise), The Confrontation, and Dangerous Game.
Then Murder, Murder.

However, I think The Scarlet Pimpernel is Wildhorn's best show now. I'm not a big fan of The Civil War, although I must admit I've never heard the whole thing. However Pimpernel just blows the socks off of J & H and deffinately just wipes Civil War out of the picture.
Jekkienumber24601

I personally despise Lost in the Darkness. The Father plotline cheapens the show and makes it too cliche. Plus I need to know was a way more powerful opening (and I mean all the verses in the correct key, not the cut down lowered crap MTI let's you do with LITD)
Eponine93

I really have mixed feelings on this show. I think all of the female numbers are really good songs. It has the best roles for girls out of all pop musicals. The problem is Jekyll and Hyde's numbers and the ensemble numbers. The show is supposed to be focused on Jekyll and Hyde but because their numbers are so awful, you end up focused on Lucy and Emma instead. It has no direction.

I love the "goodnight, Father" going into Facade, though. It's the only part of the father subplot I really like (and the only part of Facade.) What I despise about Facade the most is that it heavily reminds me of "At the End of the Day." It's a shame, since Facade has the only passable lyrics in the entire show.
BEaSTARandSINGlove

David Hasselhoff?? Musical Theatre?? Since when? Lol i've never heard of this

[quote="Eponine93"]I really have mixed feelings on this show. I think all of the female numbers are really good songs. quote]

a0 it doesnt have the best female roles in pop musical. Florence Vassey in Chess is the most challanging and greatest female role in a pop musical. Lucy in J&H is undeveloped..has sh*tty songs and Emma although she has depth lacks good songs.

b) Pop music doesnt belong in the victorian era.
Sweeney Hyde

But its ok to put pop in post Napoleonic France like in Les Miserables? I know that a lot of it is not pop but there are definate elements in it.
Eponine93

I say roles in plural, Salome. Meaning there's a good part for every voice type. I like how Emma adds a lot of depth to the innocent soprano ingenue (sp?), a character type I usually find really annoying.

As for the David Hasselhoff thing... to quote the people at my theatre who I asked to borrow the Hasselhoff DVD from: "Friends do not let friends watch David Hasselhoff sing."
Salome

I know..thats hwy I said Emma has some depth but its not enough to combat her poorly written songs and the amatuerishg dialouge.

so many more ingenue roles are far more complex..
Nellie in South Pacific
Julie in Carousel
Guenevere in Camelot
Liza in MFL
Laurey in Oklahoma
Johanna in Sweeney Todd
Cinderella in ITW
Lazarus (Adam G)

I thought Civil War was one of the most poorly researched historical musicals I've ever heard. I'm a major Civil War buff, and this show was a huge disappointment.

I can only listen to a few of the songs ("Brother, My Brother", "If Prayin Were Horses", "Sarah", "How Many Devils", and "The Glory"). The rest were typical Wildhorn bullcrap mixed with a lot of country-style stuff.
Jekkienumber24601

Dude! What about By the Swor/Sons of Dixie, Oh Be Joyful, Judgement Day, Old Gray Coat, Regimental Drummer and Last Waltz of Dixie?

(I admit, I always hated Old Gray Coat at first, to never even listen to it. It's an old guy singing about a coat, who cares right? Then later on he really starts to rock out! then it's like....an old guy's rocking out, cool!)
Lazarus (Adam G)

"By the Sword" was good, actually. But I'm not a huge fan of some of the countryish numbers.
Jekkienumber24601

yeah, but gene miller and rob evan's high c's in how man devils are awesome. I have to say all three "broadway allstar" numbers are my favorites.
BwayJuvinile

To give david some credit...it was his opening night....he still couldnt keep tempo, or sing well to save his life. Plus his arms during this is the moment is priceless.

ALthough the best part about the whole dvd taping is during special features...priceless!
Lorhen

I think that Evan was the best Jekyll with Warlow....

OT: I saw that you have the videos with him in you website BwayJuvinile.... may I see it? please.... Wink
reedzee

I also have mixed feelings on the show. It's a great story, and there are some really great songs, but there are also a large number of them that sound the same. If you listen to the introduction of Lost in the Darkness, No One Knows Who I Am, and Sympathy, Tenderness, they are all basically the same introduction, maybe in a different key. Also, the constant Facade reprises can get old after a while.
Da_Dark_Dude

i love J&H! i think its fantastic, but david hasselhoff sucks so much
Lazarus (Adam G)

You mean at the 'Underground' line? I think that was an F, wasn't it?
Apollyon

I have a big soft spot for this show, always have. However I think it can only be any good if you have a good Jekyll / Hyde who can pull off the split personality, wholey good / pure evil. and whoever cast Hasslehoff had to have been smoking something.

Evan was One Million times better than Hasslehoff. Even though he was working with the same... everything.
