Dance Audition HELP!

Hi everyone..Thursday I'm auditioning for the Color Purple National Tour as a dancer. I've always been a good dancer. I've been on dance teams and always a lead dancer in shows, even though I never had any training, because I'm a really really fast number. Anyway I know the audition is being held by Telsey and Company(Hairspray,Wicked, Legally Blonde). I want to know has anyone auditioned as a dancer for any of these shows and what know what I should expect at the auditions.

help me please..im desperate..lol

I can't comment on this specific company, but be prepared for the fact that you will be up against dancers who have had full time training obviously. Just do your best and enjoy yourself, and try not to compare yourself to the other auditionees or it will make you more nervous. The only concern I would have is that you have no training - do you know all your technical terms ok, because they may just say what they want rather than demonstrate it, and if you don't know what something is then you might be left feeling a little awkward. Be prepared that they will teach the routine very quickly, probably quicker than you have ever had to learn anything in the past. I would suggest you get yourself into ballet and jazz, and ideally tap classes, asap if musical theatre is what you want to do. Good luck!

thnk u so much Millie..I will give it my best. I do know some terms that choreographers usually shout out. I asked a friend yesterday who has tried out for a broadway show and he said. Just smile throughout the whole time, ask questions if needed and give it ur best shot. I needed this thank you again.

Also, pay attention to the choreographer--what aspects of the dance they emphasize. For instance, if he or she mentions something small, like "your hands should be flexed here," that means it's a specific thing they're looking for. Follow little directions like that. I shows that you are able to get not just the basic steps, but also some more fine-tuned elements that are necessary.

thank you emilala...i will keep that in mind also.

At the dance auditions I've been too, and heard about, usually they will do a ballet combo off the bat to weed out a majority of the people. Ballet is basically the foundation for all other dance forms. But just because you may not have perfect technique doesn't mean you will get cut. They also want a lot of personality too.

And if you mess up the steps don't let it show, just keep smiling and keep dancing.

thank you sunrae...i figured they would throw some ballet at me. I was thinking of taking ballet classes this summer and some gymnastics so I can learn how to do some tumbling.

Rather random, but would it be worth auditioning as a dancer without training? I like to dance but have never learned. I did do two years of gymnastics so it might help.

This is mostly curiosity as I won't have the chance any time soon anyway.

I did the audtion and WOW.. I've never been to anything like that before. The whole audition was ballet. Even though I messed up A LOT, i kept going with the biggest smile on my face. The judges there kept smiling and even thanked me for completing the dance. Of course I didnt get a call back to actually learn dance they do in the show. The choreographer told me that I should most def take ballet classes cause I would be amazing. Very Happy

Now I am going to go to the singing auditions tomorrow wearing the same color shirt that I wore at the dance audition. I'm going to make my face known..lol Laughing

Welldone looks like you might have done well enough to get a part that isnt too dance heavy.

Good luck on the signing audition, if you manage to do the singing and acting well then hopefully you'll get a nice part.

Just remember some of the points that have already been said about the dance audition, they still apply to the other auditions.

Keep on Smiling

Pay attention to the little details the director/musical director wants to see

Good Luck once again.

If you want to be a pro MT performer you HAVE to take ballet, they are right. Good luck!

Thank you guys for all the support u guys giving me. I went to the audition today and automatically the monitor knew who I was..lol...He said my name and said he remembered me from the dance. We both laughed. Then I sung my song and I think I did pretty well. They smiled and asked me what version was my song from (Poor Child-Wild Party) and I told them ANdrew Lippa. WHOOP WHOOP. Now I just wait ..lol
