Cutting "Moments in the Woods"?!

http://imdb.com/title/tt0099851/board/flat/96700842

Just saw that and thought you all might be interested in it/horrified by it.

Quote:
Our production of "Into the Woods" cut out the songs "Any Moment" and "Moments in the Woods." We felt that they were a little too suggestive for a high school audience. Plus, the show is very long and we wanted to shorten it a bit, and we felt that the whole Baker's Wife/Cinderella's Prince fling was unnecessary to the plot. What I'd like to know is if anyone else has done that with their production of "Into the Woods."

WHAT!?!?!?!?!?! UNNECESSARY TO THE PLOT MY ASS!
ConverseSneaker

It is totally necessary! It adds so much to both the Prince and the Baker's Wife's characters! If that's too suggestive, what about Hello Little Girl? Mad

Bloody idiots.
musikal_geek

Okay guys, calm down.

A) It's a high school- parents sue schools nowadays if people say "darn" in their school play. (k, not that bad... but you know.)
B) It is a long show. Especially for a high school.
C) It doesn't make THAT big of an impact on the plot. I mean, for sure it does add a whole other dimension, and it makes things much more interesting, but I don't think the show would be damaged that much without it. Especially for HS, not many audience members would know ITW, so they won't care in the least.
Baker

There's nothing more provacative in Into the Woods that can't be seen in Damn Yankees, Guys and Dolls, Footloose, Grease, or Joseph..., all of which are commonly done by high schools.
Snow_White

If they were going to cut a provacative song it should have been Hello Little Girl...uhm, hello...basically the school is saying it's okay to cut a song about life, learning, mistakes, love (and everything else MIW is about) but pedophilia? Suurrreee...

MIW is not even that provacative...

What? Moments in the Woods is the best song in the show.

I am definitely the only douchebag on MdN who disagrees with that statement. But I do. In fact, if I had to rank the songs, MitW is in the middle of my list.
actor

Not to be mean but if that is the case then you don't understand the song.

At the risk of sounding equally mean: bullcrap. Lots of people dislike Alexander Pope, but it isn't necessarily because they "don't like his work," which I think is profound. They just don't like it.
actor

If you fully understood the genius of the song you would know that it is by FAR the best song in the show.

I'm not going to restate my previous argument, because I was hoping that part would be understood. But to expand on it: just because something is the "best" doesn't mean it's what you "like." I openly admit that Twelfth Night is not Shakespeare's best play, but it's still my favorite.

Just because it's "the best" for some reason or another doesn't mean I have to enjoy it the most. And in this case, I don't even think it's the absolute best song in the show, so that distinction is null and void.
actor

I just can't understand how you don't "like" something which you admit is "best".

Because something can be incredible in a technical sense (for lack of a better term) without touching you personally. As a literature major, I will never deny that certain authors are very important and influencial. That doesn't mean I have to like their work. The same goes for any other art medium, including musical theater.
Baker

Um... wow.

Some people love Wicked, some people don't. Some people love Phantom, some people don't. Some people love Moments in the Woods, some people don't. It's a matter of opinion.

The point isn't necessarily whether Moments in the Woods is the best song - it's just that, any way you look at it, cutting it is baaaaad.
Jules_Labyrinth

Kragey is right. For example, my favorite song in Follies is "One More Kiss". Many people find that song trivial, and that the song doesn't have much to do with the show. I enjoy the lyrics, and I feel the songs power for its brevity is something Sondheim is amazing at composing. I also enjoy the two soprano parts in the song (to listen to, I'm a baritone!).

I believe that even if it isn't your favorite song, however, doesn't mean it can be cut. The song, as well as the storyline, give much greater depth to the characters of the Prince and the Baker's Wife. There is lots of really good dialogue in there! Also, does this mean that the baker's wife, whose part has been consistently building throughout the show dies offstage and we only learn from Jack later? The repercussions of cutting this song are paramount, in my opinion.

Did anyone read that entire thread? I think my favorite part was the end where the guy said his school didn't have enough money for a wolf's costume so they did his scenes with a puppet instead.

Enter Cinderella's Prince in Prince Costume with a Wolf Puppet on His Hand...

too funny..

They did cut hello little girl in their production.

But think the whole what big teeth you have conversation... with a puppet!
music is my life!!!

how could they do that? how is it "too suggestive" for a high school audience? there are so many moments in the show that are way more adult than that! it's the Baker's Wife's only fab song, and they shouldnt take that away

Sad
