cut songs from the movie!!!!

i was on imdb when i saw a forum that had a list of songs that are going to be "cut" and possibly be replaced as monoluges. the list goes as following:

"Epiphany", "God That's Good", "Ah Miss", "Kiss Me","Green Finch and Linnet Bird" and "By the Sea."

this is only rumored but still!!!! Sad Sad Sad
BEaSTARandSINGlove

Nooo way. I couldn't imagine this happening at all. That can't be true lol. Some of those songs are the best in the whole show?!
rytoast25

I KNOW!!!!
what_the_heck013

Shocked

HOW WOULD SONDHEIM LET THEM CUT EPIPHANY? It took him MONTHS to write it! I can see why they cut "By the Sea". Little too theatrical. Sucks for the Johanna that all her songs her cut. This probably means that the "Kiss Me"/"Ladies in Their Sensitivites" reprise-thing is also cut, which is sad because it has gorgeous harmonies.
Vice

No Epiphany?!?!?!?!?

No God That's Good?!?!?!?

Those songs make the play! At least it's A Little Preist isn't on the list.
Sweeney Hyde

Evil or Very MadAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I KNEW THAT BURTON WOULD RUIN IT!! I KNEW IT!! WHY DID HE INSIST ON DISAGREEING WITH SONDHEIM, THE CREATOR OF THIS MASTERPIECE ON APPERENTLY EVERY LITTLE CREATIVE ISSUE THAT ARROSE? THIS BEATS ALL!! I'M ROYALLY TICKED!! HOW...UGH!!! EPIPHANY? EPIPHANY IS A DEFINING MOMENT IN THE SHOW! SORRY...BUT NO MONOLOUGE IS GOING TO BE ABLE TO REPLACE IT!! MR. SONDHEIM...I'M SOOO SORRY YOUR WORK IS BEING DESTROYED BY SOMEONE WHO OBVIOUSLY DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE IS DOING! NONE OF THOSE SONGS SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOUCHED...EXCEPT MAYBE SHORTENING GREEN FINTCH...HOW...UGH...Evil or Very Mad
BEaSTARandSINGlove

For some reason, I still don't believe this is true. Sorry. It's just too ridiculous, even with Burton. I'd like to see some proof.
Sweeney Hyde

Not to long ago it was supposably announced that Sondheim left the crew over creative differences with Burton...this would back that up.
shakalakababy

i hope to god this isn't true, i really do
metaphor17

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"GOD THAT'S GOOD"?? "EPIPHANY"????? "GREEN FINCH AND LINNET BIRD"????????????????

SERIOUSLY??????????????????
what_the_heck013

So... I just looked at imdb. This was posted by some person in their message board. What a credible source (not!), plus it's a rumor.
rytoast25

i wont belive untill the movie comes out, but you never know.

like i said its a rumor.

a very scary rumor
Matthew

We should protest outside of the Studios if the rumours are true.
rytoast25

ditto

I highly doubt Green Finch will be cut. I think it's one of those songs the non-aquainted audience will accept right ahead. Unlike most of the Sweeney songs (which move the plot along rapidly) Green Finch can be taken as a "straight" song.

I think one reason people object to musicals, is that many are not used to paying attention to what goes on during a song. I think that can be one reason why certain movie musicals have been more successful than others.
Apples2for10

Well, I am now officially infuriated. How could they cut By the Sea? I know I'm practically the only one here who adores this song, but still. You all will hate me for this, but if you're going to cut a Sweeney Todd song, cut that annoying, pointless, completely meaningless "Have A Little Priest"! I can live with all the main characters dying in "Mars Attacks!", I can live with that totally God-awful debacle of a Willy Wonka remake, I can even live with the impressive yet poorly done makeup effects in Beetlejuice, but as far as Burton is concerned, I have no respect for him now! "By The Sea" is a delightful song, and the thought of making a movie adapt of Sweeney Todd without this vital song in it is galling to me.
Catherine

epiphany is a great song!

why cut it??

i really like burton... but whats the point of cutting it?

though, it could just be a rumour

This is old but this article

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/a40753/cohen-songs-axed-from-sweeney-todd.html

states that Cohen can't sing so he will do his stuff in rap. Rolling Eyes Please...I'd rather he lip synch it! Pray

Sondheim wanted to voice test Depp first to see if he could do the role but I don't know it that ever happened.

I hope for a pleasant outcome but so far it sounds as if the wheels are coming off this project. Sort of reminds me of the speculation being made prior to the film PotO.

That's acually an old rumour...really old...and it's not true fortunatley.

Darling, I'm pretty sure that was a mean spirited April Fool's joke.

I really wouldn't worry so much guys. Wait for proof.
what_the_heck013

I think the best advice for all you movie speculators comes from Mrs. Lovett herself:
"Easy now, hush, love, hush. Don't distress yourself. What's your rush? Keep your thoughts nice and lush. Wait".

EDIT: I would like to share with y'all what I wrote on the Helena Bonham Carter thread...
Quote:
Okay, first, I'm glad that there are so many mentions of auditions. Smile Second, this is Tim Burton's FIRST musical...? Oh uh uh. Has this journalist been living under a rock? This is Mr. Burton's third musical. Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, and now Sweeney...

which brings me to my third point. I sincerely doubt that Burton cut all the songs mentioned in the other post because he wants to have songs be interior monologues in order to justify the fact that the characters are singing... BECAUSE he has used the musical medium in two of his previous films. Obviously, he sees the power of a song in its use in a musical... that it can convey thoughts, and ideas, and character, and emotion, and push the plot along, etc.
Pounce

Good advice. I think I'll just ignore the speculative reports.

I guess Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is not considered a musical? I think Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was more of a musical than Burton's (and WWatCF was a much better film and Gene Wilder a much better Willy Wonka).

As for TNBC, one difference is Burton wrote it but didn't direct it.
Don't Tell Mama

I hope "Kiss Me" won't be left on the cutting room floor.

However, this coming from IMDB, it definitely should be taken with a grain of salt. I'll go to see the film regardless if these songs are cut or not.
EponineBarker

I hope nothing's cut! I like these songs! Let's just hope that this is just a rumor.

Agreed. Actually the Gene Wilder version is probably one of the greatest movies ever made. I think to think of the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp version as sort of a "movie with music", rather than a musical. In the older version, some of the songs act in a more inegrated way, making it more of a "musical".
The REAL Ciaron

It makes sense that "Epiphany" is cut.

rumors

Even though it is a rumor, we need to be cautious. In all honesty, they movie is going to be amazing but without songs like "By The Sea" and "Epiphany",....i think you get my point....

thank you. this was almost word for word my exact reaction. =D

It... does...? Sondheim spent MONTHS writing it.
Patrick

i really don't care about By The Sea being cut, and I'm not upset about Ah, Miss

And I'm in denial about the others
Sweeney Hyde

^This rumour is proving to be false now.

Sondheim is still on the project and said that just a few cuts were made for time...THANK GOD...

I guess it could still be true...but I doubt it.

The cuts are probably just shortening songs
Pannic

Those few song cuts won't be any different from the cuts that have been in almost every production of Sweeney Todd.

The original Broadway show cut the Judge's "Johanna."

The concert show cut out alot of spoken dialogue.

I believe that the 1989 revival cut "The Barber and His Wife."

And how many productions actually have "Tower of Bray?"
Sweeney Hyde

I admit that some of the cuts I'm sure they made won't be missed all that much, Tower of Bray is an excellent example...none of the Parlour songs will probably be in it...oh well.

But I swear if they touch Epiphany I'm going to go ape.
Pannic

I've never heard Tower of Bray. My personal opinion is that they should do every song with no cuts. It bugs me when numbers get cut.

Pannic wrote:

Hmmm... I can't imagine why... maybe because it was a CONCERT...?
Pannic

The reason for cutting is irrelevant to the post. It was something that was cut from a production. I was listing stuff that was cut from productions. It was not a list of stuff that was unreasonably cut from productions, it was just a list of stuff that was cut from productions.
Jekkienumber24601

guys this is the stupidist rumor ever. Just wait for the soundtrack or movie before going on any IMDB forums.
Vice

I just really hope they keep the Judge's 'Johanna'. It's my favourite one!
DanUSGS

Stop freaking out. It's clearly BS.
