Cut song from AIDA, "The Messenger," is way emoRADAMES:Everything is settled, immovable and calm Nothing that has plagued our lives can ever do us harm Then the voices railed against us, then the path was steep Now the sounds are softer, now the road is ended In your arms, I'll sleep Turn away from madness, burn the inner light Pray for me as cheerfully as I slip into the night Death is just a visitor watching for a while Sullen and predictable, love is versatile AIDA: Everything is peaceful, and falling into place I no longer feel the wounds suffered in the chase Then we were at turns divided, then by turns oppressed Now the pain is over, now we lie together Gratefully at rest RADAMES AND AIDA: Put aside the notion that the end is near Stay with me eternally, the terrors disappear Death is just a messenger in a poor disguise Fooling no one, lost for words, love is in your eyes Now we know as we are known, unimagined things Death is just the messenger, love the truth it brings The lyrics are pretty emo, as they have to be. A song that's basically about a suicide pact can't be too happy. Then add in the music- amped up power chords over a symphony orchestra: it's the most "emo" moment in musical theater history. Not since "November Rain" has a song about suicide been so heavily orchestrated as a power ballad. No wonder it was cut from the show- we don't want the audience slitting their wrists, do we? |

oohhh!
Do you have a recording of this? it's super intriguing! |

It is not a suicide pact! They have both been BURIED ALIVE in a tomb together, and these are the words they sing trying to comfort each other during their last breaths! It is a very passionate song about two people who enter immortality together! |

Not in the original incarnation of the show, "Elaborate Lives," or, for that matter, the opera. Radames is doomed to die, so Aida sneaks into the tomb ahead of time so that she can be sealed in with him. Hence, the reference to a suicide pact. This, obviously, was excised from the show along with this, the darkest song, when Disney took over and it changed to "Aida," with its theme of reincarnation and reprise of "Every Story" in its place.
And, as far as recordings, it can be heard sung by Elton John on the "elton sings aida" or "aida demo" recording, or performed in the show's actual musical setting and orchestration by Elton as Radames and pop singer Lulu as Aida on the Aida concept album. |

I need to get a recording of this. Its such a beautiful song. I find it so passionet that one would take there own life to forever be with the one they love and that love is strong enough to break the bounderes of death. It kinda reminds me of the song 'Like You' by Evanescence.
p.s. I'm NOT emo. |
| Monsieur D'Arque |
It's a decent song, but it doesn't fit with the newly concieved reincarnation ending, and is in general too "emo" for the style of the score. Especially since the non "rocking" parts are played on a funeral organ. |

it could have worked instead of the reprise of "ENCHANTMENT PASSING THROUGH" the one problem I have with AIDA is the so boring ending with all those reprises! It ruins the ending. |
| music is my life!!! |
^ OMG totally!
that's the only thing i hate about this show... the cheesey and pointless reprises... grrr.... like this song though. it makes the ending way more clear |

You can bet your ass that in the rumored upcoming AIDA movie, this'll be the credits song. |

Aw, it's not on Youtube. But, wow, emo. |
| Monsieur D'Arque |
It could have been the bleakest funeral-themed music video since "November Rain..." and no, "Helena" does NOT rank. |

Here's a recording of the song as it was sung at the reading of the show. Without the dramatic orchestrations of the finished version, it doesn't pack quite the same punch, but you can still hear the song itself. And yes, the arrangement of who sings which lines was changed later.

there is a song called Yes, You Both Must Die |
| home |
and its terrible.............................
oh god its so upbeat and happy WTF |
| Monsieur D'Arque |
Yes you both must die was a reprise of the song "Our Nation Holds Sway," which was a very bad workshop version of "Fortune Favors The Brave."
I think "The Messenger" is fairly decent (more so in its full version than the reading), but barely makes up for "Die." |
