Curious about audition song

I will soon be auditioning for a musical repertory program which will be performing a musical of unknown identity (in laymen's terms, I don't know what the show is) and I was curious if "Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord" from GODSPELL would be a good audition song for it. I realize it's one line repeated but I thought it would be good since it goes to a couple different notes and I'm a dark baritone-low tenor (Chauvelin, Javert, Sweeney, etc). I was curious if anyone had any thoughts on this because I'd really like to get in (So far their past couple of shows have had good roles for baritones [EDWIN DROOD, GRAND HOTEL, TITANIC, KISS ME KATE].

No... it doesn't have much range or character and is the wrong (rock) music type.

Also, it's completely unimpressive because the words just keep repeating. It doesn't take much preparation to sing virtually the same line over and over again. And there's not much to do with it acting-wise. You can do a lot better.

Definitely look for a better song. As stated before, it is the exact same thing over and over again- the only thing that changes is the tempo- so it's very boring and doesn't show any skill. Maybe consider looking into getting a voice-teacher to help you find songs that fit your voice and are good for auditions.

You honestly have to wait 'til you know what the show is for us to help with a song, and I would be glad to help once we know!

I used to pick audition songs based solely on range, not even on vocal difficulty necessarily (since large range does not always equal high difficulty)...

..then jazzy and salome and other people knocked sense into my head and made me realize the error of my ways. The goal of auditioning is not to impress casting directors, but to make it as easy as possible for them to imagine you in a particular role. (Impressing CDs does you little good if they have no roles for you - for example, why should I show off my coloratura passages if I'm auditioning for Cabaret?)

So ask yourself what kind of a role the casting directors will see you as if you just sing, 'prepare ye the way of the lord' over and over. Hopefully you'll see that it's hard for them to see you as anything specfic.

I strongly suggest a song that shows who you are and a song that you can act the heck out of. Remember - in a musical, you're acting 100% of the time and singing maybe 15%. Acting matters more!
