cry at an audition?Crying in a song/monologue is a party trick of mine. Maybe it's cuz I'm a cry baby in real life, but it's not hard for me to get so impassioned in a piece that I start crying. Is this a faux pax in auditions? I have this HIGH DRAMA monologue from a greek play I'm doing and it brings me to tears every time, but I'm wondering if it'll be tacky or weird to do that in a 4 minute audition.
What do yall think? To cry or not to cry, that is the question!

at a big general it will look like a party trick. maybe pull out the tears if a callback specifically calls for it.

I agree. At most auditions I've gone to, the director always says "If you are trying out for Mr. X, you're going to need to be able to cry on stage in scene 5, etc."

I've always been told that it looks better if crying comes naturally through the course of your speech, and just looks rather silly if you put it on. But it depends what the director asks for, and if it's spontaneous, so much the better?

What if you play it as if you are trying to fight off the tears, rather than full on cry?

I've never cried during a piece in audition, but I've cried during interviews. It didn't work.

I decided against crying today. It's not something I specifically "turn on." Like I said I'm just a cry baby and get so worked up in good monologues that the tears well up on their own.
Kinda made my voice sound like shitt, though. Holding back the tears made my voice all wobbly and creaky and funny. When I did something like that for my acting coach a few days ago she told me not to do that cuz it sounded weird. Poo.

at least it wasn't fake. if your voice went all weird i'd say that's not a bad thing!
when i did my clarinet grade 8, i couldn't talk during or after it cuz i thought i'd wasted 2 years of my life learning the pieces before the company changed the syllabus.... little did i know that i'd passed with honours! this told me that whenever i think i've ruine my chances, i'd been alright.
On that note, you probably did great!

in general: unless it is necessary, leave the crying up to the audience...

you could sound on the verge of tears if that will help your performance

so this has been on my mind and i've been thinking about this. What I have come up with is this... restraint is what is the most important. you trying to hardest not to cry will be 1000% percent more effective than you just crying. I hope that makes sense, but that is what I think will be the most effective...

"Acting is bad acting if the actor himself gets emotional in the act of making the audience cry. The object is to make the audience cry, but not cry yourself. The emotion has to be inside the actor, not outside. If you stand there weeping and wailing, all your emotions will go down your shirt and nothing will go out to your audience. Audience control is really about the actor’s control of his own emotions. A good actor’s tears remain at the back of his eyes."
