creating that mountain of fog for the tranformation

Hi- we are just beginning our work for Batb and I would appreciate any suggestions on the type of fog machine and fog that could be used to create that burst of mist to hide the transformation. I have used machines before for "rolling fog" or to fog the stage, but never for an immediate cloud or burst- any input would be greatly appreciated!

Also- when using the 45 degree mirror for the tea cart- what was used on the floor of the cart as the reflection?

thanks!

Hey there! I'm happy to help. I know that in our production, we are using dry ice to create that fog. The fog created by the dry ice is very dense and also easy to produce.

We had techies hiding inside our set. The Beast died on the top set, next to a hole in the floor where the fog would go through once the techies set the machine on. It looked really cool, like it was rising out of the stage.

Liquid nitrogen (LN2) is the only thing that produces the volume and height needed to get that quick burst that also disappears quickly. In our case we used a homemade heater (much like traditional dry ice machines) that was part of the castle set. You can buy LN2 from Airgas or similar suppliers. You do need to be careful though, because direct contact with the LN2 can be dangerous.

You can also do it with regular dry ice, with some sort of pressure mechanism to force the fog up (but it takes a high volume to do this, because the fog wants to drop), or with a number of different smoke machines. You want quick-diffusal liquid, otherwise you'll have a very smoky look when the transformation is over.

A little off topic, but you really should add some bright, flashing lights as well. Very Happy

I'm just going to throw this out there. Don't get too caught up in trying to duplicate the special effects from the Broadway production. This is YOUR production - make it your own, not a carbon copy of the one we've all seen before.

We also used some flashpots, but the smoke took a long time to dissipate.
