Hi. I am looking for a good monologue for my audition book which is going to be full of songs and monologues. I already have some good monologues but do you think this could work as a monologue? It's Dainty June's lines leading up to If Mama Was Married. Louise says some lines (as you can see in the scene, which is below the monologue) so I was wondering if it could work as a monologue.

MONOLOGUE :
Mama can do one thing. She can make herself believe whatever she makes up. Like that rhinestone finale dress you sewed for me. Mama wants publicity so she makes up a story about how three nuns went blind sewing. She believes it. She even believes that the act is good. Well, it's a terrible act and I hate it. I've hated it from the beginning and I hate it even more now. I hate pretending I'm 2 years old. I hate singing those same awful songs, doing those same awful dances, wearing these same awful costumes. Oh, I didn't mean it about the costumes. Do you ever feel like you don't have a sister? It's Mama's fault. I wish she'd marry Herbie and leave me alone.

SCENE FROM GYPSY :
Louise : Mama can make you a star too, June.

I don't see why you couldn't use this as a monologue for an audition. I've pieced together similar bits for audition monologues several times. It will be an especially good one to pull out when you need something short, like under 1 minute.

To be honest, a lot of directors take offense to the fact that a monologue from a musical is being used. Partly because the books of musicals aren't generally as good as straight plays and partly because it seems like the lazy way out for musical theatre actors.

The end is a bit clunky...

But you do have a knack for cutting and pasting!

What is your theatrical age range in real life?

I may be able to help you from there...give you suggestions of plays to look at...

I can play anywhere from 11 to 15. I'm really 13 but I can make myself look older and younger pretty well.
