costume

Hello Everyone! I'm a newbie so go easy on me.... Embarassed

I'm a narrator in my high school production of Joseph this year and I was wondering what kind of costume do you think would be appropriate and what have other narrators worn in your productions? There are 4 of us so i assume we'll be matching...

any ideas or suggestions? Confused

It really depends on the production. Your director probably has his or her own ideas about what you'll ultimately be wearing, but it definitely varies.

The most common thing seems to be a Sunday school teacher route - sensible but warm. I saw a production where the Narrators were just wearing dressy-casual clothes, skirt and sweater kind of thing, that they added safari hats, etc., to as the show progressed so they were always the same person but integrated into the look of the rest of the scene.

On the other hand, I've heard of productions that went for a full-out Egyptian goddess thing. Sometimes there's a theme, like three genies or whatever.

Our Narrators are going to end up roughly halfway between the two extremes, with kind of an American Idol diva look. They'll have hand-held microphones and sequins, etc.

I've never seen a version with four Narrators. You'll have to let us know what you end up wearing, I'd like to hear what route you take. Interesting.

Yeah I know the director will decide but it was just to give them some ideas 'cause I know they wil have loads to do... plus I do textiles as one of my subjects and I'm good friends with my teacher who will end up making, providing or deciding on costumes. To help her as well, it'd be better if it was something we all have or could easily get/hire.

There are four of us for a couple of reasons 1) because we need to include everyone we can 2)because the hall is pretty big so it will take a powerful noise to fill it and 3) because its a bit different and we can bounce our story-telling energy of one another and really act through the songs. We have been promised solo and duet lines as well as singing all together though so yeah as you say it should be interesting.

Somebody suggested black suits and white shirts with black bowlers and a head mic so that we look contemporary and also like we are in control (if that makes any sense haha) but i don't know how easy it would be for every to get a black suit jacket that fitted them.

Also because the youngest narrator is about 14 and the oldest about 18, we really need to look as though we go together....

I've waffled on for far too long, any other ideas are much appreciated........?????

I agree that it would definitely look best to look somehow coordinated, but I think it's important to retain individuality for each of your characters so it doesn't get static. Maybe if you all had the same t-shirt that you've beaded in different colors - one of you has all different kinds and shades of purple beads, one has green, etc., and you each wore yours with jeans? You've got a lot of leeway when it comes to the Narrators, so don't be afraid to get as creative as you want. Cool

in the annual production of JOSEPH a local theatre
does she wears this

Angel-of-Music*

Our two Narrators wore black and white suit type things.

the first wore white trousers, a white vest top, black jacket, black belt and black trilby.

the second wore black trousers, black vest top, white jacket, white best and white trilby.

they looked pretty cool.

My production ended up changing the concept halfway through, and the Narrators wore very pretty Cleopatra-type ivory dresses with gold-and-gems Egyptian-style jewelry. (They were not the same as the Egyptian chorus.) It worked and was an easy way to go, but not something I'd recommend.
