conflict about our show

My old username is inactive... sadness. Obviously haven't been on here in a while!

Anyway, I am a producer of a student theatre group at a liberal arts college. The staff is made of me, my co-producer, the director, the musical director, and the stage manager. We're in the process of choosing a mainstage musical for this season. We're down to two. The director wants to do one show, and everyone else wants to do another - and nobody's budging. We've had a couple two-hour debates about all this, but it's still one to four. I think we all have good reasons, but different ones, and we disagree which show is best for the company.

We'd like to get contracts in, so we don't really have the time to pick something else. We started with around thirty shows, and we're down to these two, both of which the director pitched in his application to be the director.

What would you do?

What are the director's reasons for not wanting to do the other show? If they put both shows in their application, then I don't see how this is an issue. If you've got a production team, then it should come to a vote and majority should rule.

And what are the reasons that the rest of the team doesn't want to do the other show? Surely there's gotta be a way of comparing the pros and cons.

Otherwise, how easy would it be to find a new director?

I know that if I had one member of my production team who was going against the rest of the team (and going against a show they originally said they'd like to do), I would give them the chance to work on the chosen show, or be replaced.

Obviously the director needs to feel a connection to the show and really want to do it, but when it comes to these kinds of things, we can't always get what we want. There are parameters we need to work within and it's a team effort!
