Concert version?

What is everyone's opinion on the concert version of Sweeney featuring George Hearn and Patti LuPone?

This is my first experience of Sweeney in any form and I was wondering how you all rate it.
TychoBrahe

It's a great version. Todd's score just sounds so good played by a big honkin' orchestra. And Hearn's voice has aged very well. The whole cast is brilliant. Nolan is a fantastic Turpin. You will want to see the touring prodution DVD, though. The concert recording being a concert recording is lacking many great moments (such as Pirelli's protruding hand).

I plan on buying more versions as soon as possible. It's just the only DVD I could find in the shop. Very Happy
Salome

Hearn is wonderful. but he is even better i nthe full production with Angie.

LuPone is all surface..she isnt a great Lovett and it brings the concert down a bit.

Nolan is a perfect Judge..creepy...driven..frightening.

Joanna is steller as is Davis Gaines as Anthony.

Beadle is a but lackluster.

Victoria Clarke is perfection as Beggar Woamn.

over all I'd give it a B.

get the full production with Hearn and Lansbury.

I have to agree with everything Salome says, almost... IMO, I think that Patti LuPone makes a fine Lovett. She's very dark in that role. Now don't get me wrong, I like Angie's performance (from what I've seen and heard) but I think that Patti is a good Lovett.

Personally, I'd give it an A-. It's great!

I felt Patti ddint have the depth to make lovett the wolf in sheeps clohing....if i were todd i'd have dismissed her as a lunatic from the start. it was evident in the concert and even moreso when she played the role opposite mumble mouth on broadway.

"Mumble Mouth" you don't know how right you are. lol

Mrs. Lovett was supposed to be somewhat crazy or she wouldn't have thought of that "meat-pie scheme."

Oh, and BTW, how long are we going to argue about this?

Salome, you forgot the best part: Neil Patrick Harris as Tobias!

Ya know, I forgot about that too. (Shame on both of us, Salome!)

I really enjoyed LuPone's performance in the concert and liked it better than her Broadway Lovett.

But I do NOT think she's better than Lansbury.

But she's just as good. I'm not usually one to compare these things. I think they both did a wonderful job and potrayed the parts the way they felt they should be played. So they're BOTH good.

I didn't like this Johanna. I much prefer the energy that Lauren Molina brought to the role. In the concert version I found Green Finch and Linnet Bird somewhat boring...

Lauren Molina is my all-time favorite Johanna. She made the role so sweet and innocent and young.

Me too. She's one of my top Johanna's. Has anyone heard her as Christine in POTO? (Wrong thread, I know Rolling Eyes, but I'm curious to see if she was good in that role.)
BenjaminB

I saw her as Christine and she was amazing.
