Pannic

Wednesday? Aww, I'm not allowed to watch TV on Wednesday.
ErikProuvaire

So excited for Company!!!!
Except the fact that it's a Wednesday depresses me because when I told my mom it was that day, she was all like "No! I need to watch American Idol!" Crying or Very sad
Damn you American Idol for making me possibly have to miss Company!
kozafluitmusique

Does anyone know how to get PBS in Europe???

I wish I could. But my vcr is outdated and doesn't allow you to tape one thing while watching another.
So I'm working on convincing my mom to miss it once...
Mainly by telling her all about how wonderful it is in an attempt to get her to want to watch see it herself...
Pannic

Yay! I have that week of school off!
Jekkienumber24601

I'm Tivoing it and watching it at the same time to make sure no recording errors happen! Soooo fuhhhhhhckin excited!
postmodern-mango-salsa

well, I know that PBS in Georgia has a tendency to be on a different day, depending on what channel it is (channel 30 and channel 8 for me) so I'm excited too : )

not gonna tape it, cuz I'll probably never watch it again, because it looks rather dull :/ Love the musical, Hate the costumes and set design.

Try rerouting your cables. Send the cable/DISH/whatever line (the line that comes into your house) to the VCR, then connect another cable from VCR to TV. If you have a DVD player taking up an outlet, you might need an a/b switch so they can share a connection. Radio Shack is a helpful place, too.

Actually, I've now convinced my mom to give up American Idol that night so I can watch Company. Mr. Green

There is a comment by PBS in the PBS Youtube video http://youtube.com/watch?v=VG8NJoabb84 which says that the broadcast will be released on DVD in Spring 2008 by Image Entertainment.

Besides the fact that it's awesome?

Well, basically, it's about five married couples in a Manhattan apartment building, and their relationship with an attractive thirty-five year-old bachelor named Bobby. They want to see him married, even though their own marriages are far from ideal.

There's nothing wrong with that!

I know absolutely nothing about this show.
And that's why I'm going to watch it! =D
mezzo_soprano

Okay thanks everyone!! I set my VCR to tape it.
Pannic

Well, I think it's playing here...
Jekkienumber24601

Found it!!! Great Performances at 10:00pm Saturday KCET Channel 6 where I am.
Tenalto

I just watched it. *dies* Completely and utterly amazing. Heartbreak and hilarity in one. Applause
qmechanic

I saw it, too. Fortunately, people in Connecticut got to see it at 9 pm tonight. Smile

I loved Raul, but I wasn't too crazy about the other performers. They were good, but not outstanding. The New York Times critic (name?) thought that since the the rest of the cast was slightly bland, that it gave more attention to Bobby (in a good way). I can see that.

I enjoyed the doubling of musicians/actors. It wasn't as gimmicky as I thought it would be. I was amazed that some actors played two different instruments! How do they play with no conductor??
Salome

I saw iti n NYC and hated the Doyle concept the instruments obstruced the actors majorly.

rewatching it..I disagree about the supporting cast. Barbara Walsh gave a wonderful new thrust to joanne and that whole scene. the Harry and Sarah scene was perfection..much like a noel Coward play.

Raul was the 2nd best Bobby of all time..next to the undefeatable Dean Jones of course.

rewatching it last night made me wish they scrapped the actor/musicians crap though. it really came alive in the book scenes when you werent being annoyied by instruments.
pish123c

Other than Raul (Who was incredibly witty, sexy, and charming I feel) my favorite performance was Angel Desai as Marta. I just couldn't get enough of her. Plus her "Another Hundred People" was so pleasant to listen to! The next performer I took note of was Barbara Walsh's Joanne. Her "The Ladies Who Lunch" left a little bit to be desired in my opinion but overall I found her very engaging.
Salome

I disagree. I found Barbara Walsh broyght an intense agony to ladies Who Lunch that hasnt been seen in the number before. it was truly chilling.
Don't Tell Mama

Walsh's "The Ladies Who Lunch" reminded me of the rendition I heard Patti LuPone sing. (Which, I suppose, can be perceived as either good or bad depending on your take of LuPone).

As for actors playing instruments - I didn't mind it so much in Sweeney Todd, and of course it works wonders in Cabaret, but at times during Company it got a tad distracting (not too much, just a little). I did actually like the fact there were no sets, reminiscent of Our Town in the sense were the audience is left to conjure up their own idea of how Bobby's apartment would look like, etc.

Overall, I was pleased with the taping, and there's no denying it's a great show. And I loved the Sondheim interview afterwards.

I really loved the set (or lack of one) as well. It was very clean and classy.

Now that I think about it, "Classy" is the adjective I'd use to really sum this production up.
ErikProuvaire

I recorded it last night and just finished watching the tape a few minutes ago... 'twas so amazing!
I can't wait for the DVD because my VCR did some odd things recording it - the picture would sometimes go all staticky and odd and sometimes the sound would cut out.
On the topic of the sound cutting out, what was the last line of April's monologue about the butterfly? The end of that line was one of the times the sound acted up... Sad
Pannic

Saw it last night, and taped it (until the tape ran out... right before "Being Alive"...)
qmechanic

The fact that the instruments were onstage gave the musical a cabaret feel (not that I've ever been to a cabaret show, this is a guess). The cabaret feel was enhanced by the simple, black costumes and mostly bare set. Marriage and relationships are an intimate topic and the intimate setting works wonderfuly.

The piano was used very effectively. I liked seeing Marta sing while sitting on top of the piano. I liked watching Bobby clumsily climb on top of the piano (emphasizing that he's still a boyish voyeur). I liked how the actor stopped playing the piano and closed the keyboard case just as Barbara Walsh was finishing "The Ladies Who Lunch."

I enjoyed seeing the actors walk around marching-band style in "Side by Side by Side".

I do agree that the instruments weren't good in all cases. I don't think they added anything to "You Could Drive a Person Crazy." I thought they were downright annoying in "Have I Got a Girl for You." Why would John Doyle have David (?) play the cello while singing "have I got a girl for you"???
Sweeney Hyde

I had seen it before the airing but my opinions still stand the same after seeing it on PBS.

I adore Raul's Bobby. It's near perfection, in my opinion.

I really don't like Angel's Mart.
Not.
One.
Bit.

I like what's her face that played Joanne. It was different that Stritch's, that much is clear, although I didn't see Stritch perform it in the show so I really can't say too much besides for their songs.

I love the couple that played Harry and Sarah.

I really really really love the woman that played Amy.

Overall, I love this production and can't wait to get it on DVD.
shakalakababy

yeah i wasn't too crazy about some of the supporting cast but i absolutely loved Amy. I didn't like the Joanne at first but she really grew on me after awhile. I liked the April a lot too, especially in the whole butterfly monologue. But I thought Raoul was the best by far.
Jekkienumber24601

I loved it. I just hope the DVD is uncensored.

I believe it's "I'm a living thing, too, you shithead!"

Sound "cut out" because it was censored. Bleh. I hope everything's intact on the DVD.

Heather Laws.

She's quite amazing.

Word is that there's no censors on the DVD, which makes me a happy camper because it's wonderful to see the show and hear the lines intact...but then to see them falter under censorship, it's a shame. But there should be no such alterations on the DVD itself, thank goodness.

I loved it too. And I hate the original key for the song. the chords and melody sound so much better when it's lowered.

I disagree. I like the song way better in it's original key. It just doesn't sound right lowered. There's something missing and it's not just the perfect orchestrations of the OBC.
Joshua

Oh and another thing. Have I Got A Girl for You sounded TERRIBLE slowed down so much. It was far too slow.

Good to hear that! I can't wait to hear the line in its uncensored glory?
What is it that really makes "shithead" than the numerous uses of "son of a bitch" though?

ooh i agree 100% Why did they slow it down? It wasn't that slow on the revival cd even

Yeah it wasn't THAT slow on the CD, but it still sucked compared to the original...
