community & college theatre ---> to semi pro/proGreetings,There's a semi-pro/ professional theatre in my area doing Rent next year. I've done shows in college and in community theatres in the area solidly for 6 years now and I'd madly enjoy the opportunity to play Mark. Vocally and age-wise, I'm a fit. But, here's my question to ye seasoned performers: In semi-pro or professional settings, what automatically qualifies an auditioner to participate? Or perhaps the better question is, does not having done a show in semi-professional or professional settings automatically disqualify a person from participating in a show? People will say "You need more experience," but then, how does one get experience if no one gives them the chance to get it? My concern is that because my parents never enrolled me in programs through which I could be discovered and that I haven't the money to enroll in high profile classes, that I'd be simply looked over as not having experience. I mean no arrogance, but perhaps I am demonstrating naivete when I say that I consider myself a solid performer. But that's not enough, obviously. Thoughts? |

Talent is enough, but trained talent will beat untrained talent. Does this company allow non-Equity actors to audition. If so, then you're as welcome as anyone else. However, if you don't get Mark and you're offered an ensemble part, I suggest you take it. That's how you get experience in a professional setting.
OT to your question, but are the rights to the full version of Rent now available? I had heard a rumor, but it sounds like it may be true. |

Of course not! The only exception would be if it is an Equity only production. I doubt it is. |

Even if it's an Equity production, it would not 'disqualify' someone who is not Equity. If the individual is cast in an Equity production, they automatically get their card. It happens all the time. |

thanks for the replies, all.
I suppose there's no unilateral accounting for snobbery. We'll have to see how this particular theatre and casting committee operates. I auditioned when I was younger and less experienced at a theatre and they weren't very gracious about me not being a professional. I mean, I can understand wanting a professional, but I didn't think they need be so Simon Cowell-ish about it. |
