Colours

Does any body have a witty way of teaching an under 15 cast the dreamcoat colours? There an amazing bunch but get so lost after fawn! bless them

Currently -

Starlight express - Rusty
Guys and Dolls - Sky
Beagle On Stage

Unfortunately, I don't know of any other way to teach them than hearing/practicing the song over and over until you know it by heart, just like any other song. It would be hard even to use a pneumonic device or anything since it's so fast and they all have to be one after the other.

It's going to be a long haul, but don't worry, it CAN be done, lol.

Maybe try and split it up into a few blocks, if they are good up to fawn, try teaching them the colours just after fawn and once both halves are drilled into their heads Laughing put them together..

not really witty but it's the only thing I can think of Laughing it would work with me but I have a strange brain
Baker

Maybe you could split up the song?

First group sings "red" through "ruby."
Second group sings "olive" through "crimson."
Third group sings "silver" through "orange."
And then everybody sings "blue."

I thought this was going to be an impossible task for my 6 year old, who is in this show right now. One day i reminded her that she had to work on learning the colors, and i swear 10 minutes later she was jumping up and down saying "I know the colors!". Of course i didn't believe her, since she literally had just left the room to practice it. Until i heard her correctly rattle them all off! i was shocked - i have a 10 yr. old in the show also who doesnt know them yet. Not sure how she did it. But our show did print out little note cards for the kids with all the color in order. I think there is one part where they start to repeat also, if that helps. Good luck - tell them if a 6 year old can learn it, they can too!

Mollysmom, I would imagine that that had something to do with the cognition of someone so young, like how an under-six or so can be fluent in four languages just from hearing them, but an adult would have to study them for years. Kids really are amazing.

And yes, the colors do repeat - Joseph will get all the way through "Such a dazzling coat of many colors, how I love my coat of many colors," and then the list repeats starting back with "It was red, yellow, green...."

Oh, but believe me--once they DO learn it, they'll know it for good! I was in this show 3-4 years ago, and I still remember them. The other day, a friend of mine who is in it right now was reviewing the colors to herself, and I found myself singing along (and remembering the colors better than she did). How or why I still remember, I don't even want to know. Razz

Have them recite it and if they give it right, give them a treat?

That's what our director did for CATS, in the prolouge there's this huge list...

Practical cats, dramatical cats,
Pragmatical cats, fanatical cats...

it goes on like that for awhile .___.; took me an hour to learn. (which is long for me, I don't know how the eight year olds did it!)

Also, you could make a large poster with all the names of the colors, typed in the colors they represent. That might make things easier to visualize.
