Cole Porter song of the dayI did this a while ago and havent kept up with it..so its back!
comments..opinions and discussions....todays song:
"Down in the Depths"
with a million neon rainbows burning below me,
and a million blazing taxis raising a roar,
here i sit, above the town,
in my pet-paillated gown,
down in the depths
of the ninetieth floor.
while the crowds in all the nightclubs punish the parquet,
and the bars are packed with couples calling for more,
i'm deserted and depressed
in my regal-eagle nest,
down in the depths
of the ninetieth floor.
when the only one you wanted wants another,
what's the use of swank and cash in the bank galore?
why, even the janitor's wife
has a perfectly good love life,
and here i am, facing tomorrow,
alone in my sorrow,
down in the depths
of the ninetieth floor.

I heard this for the first time at an audition about 18 years ago and thought it was an unusually well-written song. I did not know the author until after it was over, but was not surprised.

Porter paints such a vivid picture with his words...
This is one of my favorites!

Next Song..
Get Out Of Town
introduced by thew fantastic Libby Holman. also recorded by Rosemary Clooney and Mel Torme.
Get out of town
Before it's too late my love
Get out of town
Be good to me please
Why wish me harm
Why not retire to a farm
And be contented to charm
The birds off the trees
Just disappear
I care for you much too much
And when you're near, close to me dear
We touch too much
The thrill when we meet is so bittersweet
That darling, it's getting me down
So on your mark get set
Get out of town

Like "90th Floor" it takes delight in opposites and irony. Hart did the same with "Glad to Be Unhappy", and also Ira Gershwin with "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin" and the "little wow" in "How Long Has This Been Going On?".
