Clumsy Cinderella

Hey all. I've secured the part of Cinderella in ItW. I can't express in words how I excited I am (only in whoops and giggles), but I have one little worry. I'm a bit nervous about the character's clumsiness. I've never done any slapstick or 'pratfalling' before and I'm worried I might hurt myself. Apparently Laura Benanti broke her neck attempting it!

Does anyone have any tips? Maybe you've had to deal with this problem before? You might be saving a life... Rolling Eyes

Congrats! I'm playing Cinderella in ITW right now as well. As far as the clumsiness, just don't try too hard or you will hurt yourself. Seriously, I almost twisted my ankle. So just let it come naturally, and try a few times to discover a "safe" way of falling.

And this is just from my director's standpoint, but I really wouldn't play up the clumsiness too much aside from the two times she does fall, which is mainly due to the shoes. Cinderella still should be pretty graceful and poised, which is the hard part for me since I am really clumsy and not graceful at all.

I think Cinderella is drunk after the parties. Not much grace there. But then again, don't be a trashy drunk bum.

A little tipsy can be funny. Smile But yeah, don't overplay it. Have you blocked these scenes yet? Hopefully your director or choreographer can show you a safe way to fall.

Thanks for your help Smile
We've already acted through the scenes a few times, but as we've only been rehearsing for a few weeks, our director's not been terribly critical of us yet. I'm hoping I'll be given a few tips when it comes to it.

At the moment I'm just left wondering how on earth Charlie Chaplin did all that... It's so much more difficult than it looks!

And Joshua... trashy drunk bum advice noted Wink

Thanks for all your help, it's worked out alright. It'll look nice in costume... You know, I think getting to wear Cinderella's festival dress just might be the best thing about playing her.
Ours is brilliantly gold and gaudy, I love it Smile
