Clueless..

I'm trying out for High School Musical (Yes, the kiddy show from Disney) at a local theatre and in addition to singing a song from the play, we have to sing an urban, pop, or a song from another musical.

Now I'm thinking, "What the heck am I gonna sing for an audition like that?". They're looking for people who can entertain 7 year olds, so I'm thinking of a cutesy type of song like something from Hairspray, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

Maybe you could check out the "Audition Song Thread?" sticky at the top of this page...there are lots of people who respond to that thread faster than they respond to individual threads...

And it cuts down on the clutter of seeing a bazillion people asking "What Should I sing for HSM?", which seems to be what everyone's doing these days...

Here's another thread that may help... http://www.musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=55189

Also, when asking for help...please give us a sense of what songs are in your rep/sound good in your voice...roles you've played in the past, etc...

That will help us give more accurate advice...

Try doing something from Grease. In my uncle's words, HSM is like Grease only without the kissing (which is the best part Very Happy ) Anyway, "There Are Worst Things I Could Do" is a good song that isn't that well-known or overdone even though its from Grease, has a HSM feel and also gives you a good chance to show your acting skills. What song from HSM do you have to sing for the audition?

If you get to pick.... DO NOT PICK BREAKING FREE. I REPEAT DO NOT PICK BREAKING FREE. That song is impossible. I'm still in shock over my auditions. Unless you have someone professional to seriously work with you on it DO NOT SING BREAKING FREE. This is something I feel very strongly about.

uhhhh yes it is. It's one of the most horribly overdone songs in the history of musical auditioning. gaaahh I've even heard people do it on AI, not to mention that new Grease TV thingy.

I'll keep those things in mind, thanks.

Oh and the song from the show we have to sing is "All in this together" which is a super easy song and the sheet music is all over the place.

Another suggestion I am sure most girls will NOT be doing is something from "The Wedding Singer." The music definitely has a pop (ok, eighties pop but pop) feel and is fairly easy. I would suggest "Someday" from all of the songs from the musical because it is easy, fun and shows your sweet side. It doesn't have a lot of color but for HSM you don't want to show a lot of color. The only thing is, depending on where you live, the directors may not know it.

^I don't think the vocal selections have come out for that yet...but there are some good songs from it that...
