Christine's willpowerTo what extent would you say that Christine ventured into the Phantom's underworld all by herself or did the Phantom's hypnotic thrall have some part to play in her actions? I'm a little sure that she, young and innocent as she was, equated the Phantom with her father's so-called Angel of Music, thereby giving her mind blindly to his influence. At least she knew that the Phantom was a murderous creature, and at least she had the willpower to escape with Raoul and escape the Phantom's influence.

I think that initially in the ALW version, she gives herself over to the Phantom honestly because of her belief that her father has 'sent her' the Angel of Music to guard over her. These were much simpler times, remember.
However, in a more modern idea, according to Mythbusters, you cannot be forced to do something against your will by post-hypnotic suggestion.

Jordan made a good point about how she was assured that the Angel was there to protect her and guide her. Although I also think some of it had to do with a trance. I know I wouldn't follow him down there! Even if David Boreanaz or Milo Ventimglia was under that mask!
