Chorus Line Auditions

I have an audition for A Chorus Line coming up in a couple months. I have no idea which character i should go for (I've been told that i should not go off the movie) or what to sing, and i would like to get started as quick as possible. Any recommendations would be absolutely wonderful!!!!!

Personal info:
18 yrs old
brunette
medium height (5'3")
13 yrs dance experience
soprano w/ wide range (can comfortably sing high A...high D when warmed up....and F below middle C)
I tend to have a childish sounding voice (think Amy in Little Women, but not as annoying), but when i focus, i can make it more mature (kind of like Susan Egan's version of Belle) and can also go operatic. I can belt, but don't have a strong range yet (up to a B...C on good days), as far as that goes.

go for Maggie

any recommendations on what i should sing? I am absolutely horrible at picking songs that work for characters (and that arn't extremely overdone).

maybe Far From the Home I Love from Fiddler? It's more of a mezzo song, but it shows a good range high to low, and some spots where a mixed-belt (not an all out belt) would sound really nice. It's also a very emotional song so you can really bring out your acting skills in the song. The character of Maggie is a soprano, and does some belting in At the Ballet. But in the other songs she's up there. She also has a small monologue in At the Ballet so some good dramatic acting skills are needed. (Of course, all the characters in the show need strong acting skills!) Can you sing the whole song? Or just 16-bars? If it's only 16 bars I would suggest starting at "Who could see that a man would come...."

You can also look at the audition songs sticky thread for some other song choices. They're all listed by voice type and song type (soprano ballad, soprano up-beat, etc)

Hope that helps!

Going through my music, these are some songs that i found that i thought might work (that way i don't have to buy any more).

The Story Goes On - Baby
I'm Not Afraid Of Anything - Songs For A New World
I'd Give It All For You - Songs For A New World
Come To Your Senses - Tick...Tick...Boom

Our accompanimist is a music professor, so i'm not worried about the accompaniment being hard...he was playing the opera pieces last night, and those things are tricky!

Those are all that i could think of....if you have any other ideas, let me know...i will buy the music if i think it's worth it.

Sunrae...i'm looking into Far From The Home I Love, but i think they want something a little more modern.

have you looked anymore into the characters from the show?? Have you decided to go for Maggie? Just wondering b/c depending on what part you are going for will make a big difference in your song choice. From the selections you listed, if you're going for Maggie (or Judy, or Bebe) I would suggest I'd Give It All For You. But if you've decided to go for someone else, like Cassie (which, with your dance backround may be a great part to go for!) I'd go with I'm Not Afraid of Anything. It has more power behind it. (Is it a youth show or all ages? Depending on the ages they are casting, Cassie is usually one of the oldest in the cast) I'm not familiar enough with the other two songs to say yay or nay. Ultimately it comes down to what song you'll be most comfortable with (of course you have awhile to become comfortable with any song) and which song you think will showcase your voice the most.

It's a college show, and i'm a freshman
