Children of Eden

Who here has heard of the Stephen Schwartz play? I absolutely love it, it has a poignant story and BEAUTIFUL music in it.
Kiwi

A lot of people have heard of it. I love the music. I have yet to see it staged, however. We were considering doing it at theatre school this year, but that fell through.
bwayobsessed

My school just did that for our spring show. When performed correctly, it's quite good and very moving at points.

I find it rather "meh" worthy. I like the first act okay but the second act kind of looses my interest with the songs that all sound the same...I never say that. Because, to me, songs don't tend to sound the same...you know? But in the second act...they do...and I get sick of it.

Cue Salome with her fist in the air.

I know you've said Act Two sounds all the same, but I still don't see it. I'm not saying you are wrong, just that I haven't noticed it yet.

Anyway, yes, I've heard of it. I have the whole thing memorized. I have backing tracks to all the songs but one. I watch my school's performance all the time. I sing it in my free time. I love the music. It's one of my favorite shows.

And, I know a lot of people on here hate it, but honestly, I just don't think they get it.
blu486

I honestly don't see how Act Two sounds the same. I've listened to it and they don't all sound the same in my opinion.

I'm performing in it over the summer with a community theater in my city.

I, personally, love Children of Eden! I have seen it staged twice and am hopeful that at some point our group will have the people to do it.

Children of Eden is a beautiful show. Although the second act does have a lot of slower songs, I don't think they sound very similar to one another.

Act Two Songs:
Generations: It sounds completely different from all the songs in the Second Act. I can't stand this song, personally.
The Gathering Storm: One of my favorite smaller songs. It uses the "This is the last chance I will give" section.
A Piece of Eight: This song is very unique from the songs in the entire show. It has an awesome baseline, and that alone makes it stand out from the rest of the show.
Blind Obedience: This is a very small number, and it goes back to "The Mark of Cain" by using similiar lyrics, but is much slower.
The Return of the Animals: is a fantastic song that sounds nothing like any of the numbers in the second act.
Naming Reprise and Noah's Lullaby: hints back at "The Naming" and to "Children of Eden". "The Naming" section is much slower than the original, and the "Children of Eden" section is in a different key.
Stranger to the Rain: Again, this song doesn't sound anything like the other songs. It stands on it's own.
In Whatever Time We Have: This song also sounds nothing like the others. It's in Cb and has rolling piano parts in both the bass and treble clefs. When I say rolling, I mean, continous eighth notes. I don't know if they are considered straight eighths or not. Both hands are constantly moving, anyway.
The Flood: The opening of "The Flood" goes back to the ending of "The Gathering Storm" by opening with the "This is the last chance I would give" section. The rest of the song is it's own, until the very end, where it goes back to "Father's Day" and has two lines from "Let There Be".
What Is He Waiting For: This song also sounds nothing like the rest of the second Act, and doesn't hint to any of the songs.
Sailor of the Skies: After the first part of the song, the melody line becomes the same melody line from "Sailor of the Skies", and then at the end, we get another section of the "Children of Eden" theme, but in Cb. The piano section at the end of the song is the music in the beginning of "Let There Be" transposed.
The Spark of Creation - 2nd Reprise: Pretty self explanitory, as it is a reprise. However the end of the song hints back to "A World Without You", which was also echoed in "Clash of the Generations."
The Hardest Part of Love: is one of my favorite songs in the show. Once again, there are no hints to any other songs in this song.
Words of Doom: is a very short song that has no references to any other songs in the show.
The Hour of Darkness: The opening melody line to this is the same as the melody line that Eve sings in "Children of Eden". The piano line then goes into a "Sailor of the Skies" solo, and then it seques into "In Whatever Time We Have" which is sung by Noah's Family, and, in my opinion, is one of the most powerful moments of the show. The piano line after they sing once again uses the "Let There Be" piano part that comes after "light" and goes underneath "I woke up for a curious dream" in a different key, and then the song continues into "Aint It Good".
Ain't It Good: Ain't It Good sounds nothing like the rest of the songs in the show.
Precious Children: hints back to "Grateful Children," but uses different words, and is in a slightly different key. The words hold an entirely different meaning. But the repetition is appropriate because the father is talking to them now, instead of them talking to Father.
In The Beginning: One of the most beautiful songs in the entire show, it stands on it's own until the very end. The harmonies in this song are beautiful and powerful. The ending of the song seques into the "Children of Eden" theme one last time, and it's sung by the entire cast, asking where has mankind come to, and asks the audience to seek for Eden themselves.
MusicalGal1194

I've never seen the show, but I'm singing 'Stranger to the Rain' in lessons and I find it beautiful! It's a great song, so I hope it's a great show, too. I would love to be in it one day.
blu486

The show is absolutely beautiful, I can't wait to perform in it this summer. Even if I will just be chorus, I don't care. Chorus is just as fun!

And I will admit, Wicked is better, but they're written by the same person, and Stephen Schwartz even said that Stranger to the Rain is, in his opinion, one of his favorite songs out of those that he has written.
curlyhairedsoprano91

Love this show.

Loooove it.
Lepitot

I don't really know which musical I prefer. Children of Eden is just so much more emotional than Wicked. Wicked has like two "emotional" songs in the whole show. I love Wicked, and I love Children of Eden. But, comparing them, to me, is just like comparing lamb and tunafish. (even though I've never had either of those Razz...I just wanted to reference Big Daddy Smile )
blu486

I would compare them in different ways. Like which is better in certain areas.
Salome

Both shows are a mess.
Lepitot

That's your opinion, and the opinion of lots of people on here. Some people do like the shows, though. Different people like different things.

Children of Eden has issues but it is certainly not a mess.

But, both of the other Children of Eden threads went downhill becuase of this argument. It's been argued over before. Let's not do it again.

kthxbye
Salome

it is a mess. its simply tyhe worst musical to ever hit the professional stage.
Melindaisy

Which, of course, is why it is produced so often in community theaters around the country.......
