Children of Edenokay so I am about to do this show soon and all I know is that it was written by the same man who wrote Wicked, and it is about Adam, Eve and Noah. If someone could explain the plot and the characters I would really apreciate it!! Who is the main female character, and how many females are in the show? Thankyou for your help._____________________ Current roles- High School Musical (Taylor McKessie) & Parade (Mary Phagen) musicals only Previous roles- The Jungle Book (Baby Monkey) The Beauty and the Beast (feather duster) The Wizard of Oz (Lacreecia the Witch) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Princess Starlight) Peter Pan (Liza) R&H's Cinderella (Rose the citizen) The Secret Garden (chours) The Sound of Music (Elsa Shrader) Mamma Mia (Rosie) Wicked (chours) Hairspray (chours) The Music Man (Zaneeta Shinn) |

I saw it a few years ago and enjoyed it. I wasn't blown away by it, nor was I jumping to do it, but it looked like the actors had a fun time doing the show. There are a few songs that are beautiful. I'm one of those people that can find some good in just about anything. I don't think it's a terrible show, it's just not a great one. But I'm sure you'll have fun with it.

I'm Aphra!hey guys so I just found out that I got the part of Aphra, which I am excited about cuz it is at my professional broadway school and only 13 people have speaking roles! I have the script and I know about her and the songs she sings but if anyone has any information on her I'd appreciate it!!Current roles- Children of Eden (Aphra) musicals only Previous roles- The Jungle Book (Baby Monkey) The Beauty and the Beast (feather duster) The Wizard of Oz (Lacreecia the Witch) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Princess Starlight) Peter Pan (Liza) R&H's Cinderella (Rose the citizen) The Secret Garden (chours) The Sound of Music (Elsa Shrader) Mamma Mia (Rosie) Wicked (chours) Hairspray (chours) The Music Man (Zaneeta Shinn) High School Musical (Taylor McKessie) |

Re: I'm Aphra!
^What is this list at the bottom? Were you in these shows? That seems fairly illegal to me. Beyond that, anything you need to know about Children of Eden can be found in the bible or in Stephen Schwartz's book of poorly created rhymes. |

My new school did it for their fall musical...if I was at that school already, I would know something.

the musical score is dreadful..the lyrics are banal and inane..the plot is thin...the god character comes off as a petulant child that can't get his way.
its one of the 3 worst shows ive ever been stuck seeing. |

alright well, youre entitled to you opinion
i was in it this summer. it was amazing |
||||||
| Salome |
I still pity you if you think its a good show.
| broadwayxdoll |
i agree its not really the best show when you think about it being a shoooow. but it has some great material that if performed well is very moving
| Salome |
where is the great material? every song is the show is awful. its the only musical that I can truley say lacks a single good song. even "Wicked "has "Wonderful" and "Aida" has "Another Pyramid".
| broadwayxdoll |
okay im just going to stop talking about it because obviously we dont agree on it and it feels like youre putting me down because i like the show. so im just going to be done with this conversation

Isn't that like most of his musicals since... well, since "Godspell?" I have always liked how you can take songs from almost every single one of his shows and swap them for songs from another and not even have to change a lyric for it to work. For example, "Corner of the Sky" for "Wizard and I." Or "Spark of Creation" for "Defying Gravity." He writes in a pattern... And not a very good one at that. |
||||||
| Salome |
I think his only good score is Pippin. Godspell has a few good songs but Pippin is really a strong song cycle. the book ofv the show is problematic but for Schwartz..Pippin is a mastepiece. LOL
and broadwayxdoll,I'm not putting you down. I'm putting the show down. its unredeemable. |

I don't know-I very well could be biast (don't know if I'm spelling that right...lol) about how much I love this show, but I really think it's great! I agree that the lyrics/dialogue are SO corny, but in a way, I think that's what makes it cute! And as for the God characters acting like a child, it all depends on the actor who plays Him and what they put into the role. I've seen it several times and some have really seemed like a bratty kid while others have taken the role in a whole new directiona nd it didn't seem like that at all. As for the music, I could never say that it was bad, especially In the Beginning. We did this show at my church and we toured with it to San Francisco. We sang In the Beginning for a church service and LITERALLY every single person in the audience cried (and yes, there were a lot of people). I'm not sure if it was because we were so awesomely amazing (lol) or if it's the song, but it was probably a bit of a mix of both. I guess I'm a little biast (still don't know how to spell that...hehe) because our production with my church just put so much into it and we analyzed it a lot and the corny lyrics actually didn't ALWAYS seem so corny. Anyway-yea-it's kind of hard to explain-but overall, if done well, I think it's an amazing show.

I enjoyed the show as well.... I liked the music.. I liked the way it was staged when I saw it. The actor who did God was awesome and didn't come off at all childish...
I found it to be an entertaining evening of performance. Not every show needs to be deep and meaningful.... and everyone has their own personal opinion and tastes. That's what makes the world go round. |

it is NOT a terrible show! maybe you just saw it with terrible actors. i recently saw it and adored it.. it was done incredibly well. |

Well... It may not be terrible. But it's not very good... |

Children of Eden is Basically the story of the bible from chapter 1 -7 of genesis. It has the story of adam eating the fruit, cain and able, everyone on the ark, a HUGE FIGHT BETWEEN NOAH, SHEM, HAM, JAPETH, AND YONAH, and the story of japeth trying to find eden.
| theatreisme |
I was in children of eden at my local theatre. i was cain in act 1 and shem in act 2. I think it is an amazing muscial. I think a lot of the songs are amazing like lost in the wilderness or peice of eight and stranger to the rain. But different theatres look at each character in a different way. Like we took aphra and asha and made them all stupid and blond. And we took god and made him sorda act like a child. And we also added a scene in act 2. We added it right after japeth asks yonah to come on the ark. the whole point of that scene was to show how much shem hates yonah. And we even took the song stranger to rain and changed the lyrics like shed a tear for her light a candle for her sake. But each theatre will do it there way so just seeing it once wont really justify the whole muscial as a whole

I think this is one of those shows that can be altered from theatre to theatre and you'll never see the same show twice if you see different productions. I love shows like that!

So, I just found out that the theatre company is doing this after high school musical... basically all the talented seniors will get major roles because its the last year they can be a part of the company. (Yay for me!) My friend Nathan suggested the play, and he's amazing and will most likely get Adam... and he thinks I would make the perfect Eve... but I'm kind of iffy about the whole play. Just the fact that I don't know how many times I get into arguments about the bible with people (sorry people, I'm a girl who backs scientific evidence and evolution) but I mean, I'm still open minded... It won't prevent me from trying out or anything... I respect people's beliefs and I think the bible is a lovely book of fiction! (no arguments please, you're wasting your time) I just wonder how good it is, and what the role of Eve is like and whether I'm going to be in a cast full of bible thumpers (which gahhhhhh run!) I've downloaded a few songs, one I didn't like, but the other ones are quite pretty I think. I asked Nathan if we got to be naked but then I realized it was childrens theatre. Damn. No naketivity. |
||||||
| Salome |
no. i mean the score..the script the lyrics...all god awfully bad. I have seen 2 productions of it because freinds were in it. plus i know the cast recording. its Scwartz's worst show. itsa even worse than Wicked. |

I agree that the book is corny, and boring. But, I definately disagree about the music. There are a few songs that I don't like, but for the most part I think they're wonderful.
By the way, I don't think Spark of Creation is that much like Defying Gravity. I always thought that The Wizard and I and The Spark of Creation were very similiar. (Although, Spark of Creation and Defying Gravity are similiar in that they are both in Db...at least the reprise of Spark is.) World Without You I think is a really, really pretty song (though I find it hard to sing.) and I don't think it's crappy at all. I love Spark of Creation. Close to Home is beautiful and if done well is very powerful. Same with Children of Eden. Lost in the Wilderness is one of my favorite songs. I love some of the vidoes on youtube of people performing this as a solo. In Whatever Time We Have I think is a great song, too. I like the video of Naomi Price singing it for the Fallen Rose production. In The Beginning I think is amazing. I realize that by seeing the show, it is boring. I saw it after I performed in it. We saw it in Pittsburgh with the cast, and I enjoyed it but had I not known every word and did little mini dance moves with my fellow castmates and sang quietly along, I probably wouldn't have liked it that much. I didn't like the acting. However, I think for all its flaws, Children of Eden is a great show to perform in. Whether its great to watch is debatable. But, speaking from my own experiences, once you perform in it, it almost haunts you. I find myself randomly singing In The Beginning or Lost in the Wilderness. And everytime I sing it I fall in love with it again. Maybe it was because the cast I performed with was really close and it was literally one big family and it was a lot of fun. Maybe I like it for all the good memories. But, I still think Children of Eden is a good show. It's not an amazing show to watch. But, it's still, three years later, one of my favorite musicals, and I'd jump at the chance to be in it again. Wow, that was verbose. Lol. Oh, and, what constitutes a good song to you? I've heard several people say that Wonderful is the only good song from Wicked...but I think there are a lot of great songs from Wicked. So, what are people finding in Wonderful that is supposedly not in the other songs??? |

I did this show a few years ago and loved it. The show may have bad lyrics and ashallow book but it can be powerful with the right company and the right direction. |
