Charity Collection

I've always thought that during Bui Doi, a collection should be taken. Not necessarily for the Bui Doi but for any children's charity. I've always felt that it would work and generate a good return for charity.

What do you think?

No.... definitely not.

Yes....i can see it. BUT unfortunatly NO! it would kill the moment.

Unless it was done with Brechtian undertones...hummm...thoughts abound. BUt you then rely on auidince participation and the style of the enitre show being destroyed in one moment!

Hmm... I get where you're coming from, but the way I see it is that the audience aren't overly interested in this song, it's placed immediately after the interval...

I could of course be very wrong. However, the three or four times I've seen the show, I've come out thinking a collection could be taken at that point.

If it was a church, yes. but its a show... its not a charity event... that makes me sound heartless, but thats not the reason for the show. it would break the moments and it would be sooooo much faffing about! but nice idea, i guess.

That's pretty much why I said no too - it's not appropiate during a musical. It's a nice enough idea to collect for charity but would maybe be better placed at the doors as people leave if done at all.
An audience sat watching a show isn't going to want to suddenly have people in front of them asking for money. It would make many people feel uncomfortable and annoyed.

yeh, and anyway, its only one section of the show... its not like the whole show focuses on the bui doi, granted its a small theme, but its not what the shows about.

It may be approprotae. BUT it depends upon the style adopted by the cast/director. I don't think we should dismiss the idea. I'm coming round to it GB!

really? Confused
....odd

The way I see it would be like the collection at church, a pouch being passed along the rows, ushers at each end of the rows to send them along the next row. You wouldn't want a proper charity collection box which would make all the coins rattle as they were dropped in as that would be way too annoying.

Before the song started, an announcement from the theatre that during the next song a collection would be taken for X Charity. Best place to start the collection would be in the stalls of course - the expensive seats!

This could work equally well in Avenue Q's "Money Song".

Sorry, I still think it sounds awful. It's not church, it's a theatre and of course it would be distracting.
I would be horrified if a collection came along my row when I was sitting trying to enjoy a show - and I'd seriously think twice about going to any show that did this.
Keep it in the foyer if you must have a collection.

Oi

its a show! its a show! its a show! you dont go to a show to have collections thrusted at you. you wouldnt expect to have that sort of thing at the cinema in the middle of watching a film so why would you have it in the theatre?

I agree with those against this idea. I don't think it would work at all. The way the show is directed I think it would completely ruin it to evolve the audience especially that far into the show when you haven’t before. It would also be awkward the amount of people having to search get bags from under seats, find purses, get money all in the dark and the chances are in big theatres there wouldn't be enough time to get around the everyone in the time of the song and there would end up being distracting jingling, moving, suffering all though an important part of the musical which if you miss you've kinda lost the plot. Most people will be more interested in the projections/song and it would make them lose concentration. I think Bui Doi has some of the best lyrics that should be heard and together with the projections really get your emotions going so should have full concentration from the audience.

totally agree, very well said indeed.
