Character Discussion: Max DetweillerI love Max; he's my favorite character in the show and I hope to play him someday. He appeals to me because he is multi-faceted. He's out only for money and himself, but I think he cares at least somewhat about Captain and Maria and the children. I like to think that Max would put a contract out on you for a quick buck, but God forbid you get hurt, he'd be the first one to visit you in the hospital-with flowers! I think that his kindheartedness (which I don't feel you get too much of in the stage show)is mostly due to Richard Haydn's portrayal in the 1965 film. He wasn't maybe the best choice for the role (I think Richard Burton or Gregory Peck would have been good choices), but he was wonderful nonetheless. So, who else loves Max?

Richard Haydn was fantastic in the film, but the character was made more dramatically compelling for not having those two songs.
