Character Discussion: Lily St. RegisIt's hard for me to believe that in "Annie"'s original conception, Lily wasn't even in the play!  But overall, I'm glad they decided to include her. Not only did Rooster need a sidekick, but I thought it was very clever to include a character that could really get on Hannigan's nerves. As for the movie (even though I hate Bernadette Peters with a passion), Lily was a highlight for me. Also, my friend is playing Lily in a production of "Annie" in a few weeks, so that's another reason for this thread. So, anyone else dig Lily?

But I really hate the way they used her for the ending in the TV movie. She just randomly forgoes the plan and bursts in on Rooster and Hannigan, therefore destroying all hopes of getting the money? And Lily's Shirley Mudge! Grr, that made me angry.

Yeah, I was also a little disapointed with the WWOD version of it and am ashamed to say that I own the VHS of it.

Lily is awesome!!!
Then again, I'm kinda biased, 'cause I played her last year. Everyone expected me to be Grace, but the truth is, I really wanted Lily, which is what I told the director. I was absolutely over the moon when I was cast.
I got a card from our Rooster on closing night which said "You stole every scene you were in. Bitch!" Lily is just one of those roles where you can do that. And "Easy Street" is by far the best number in the show!

She always tries to be like a big, huge diva (like Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Julie Andrews, etc) and she's just not. She's not even close to earning all the spotlight and glitz that they earned. She's way younger than them, she's got a terrible voice, she's just totally untalented and I'll never know how she got to be known as a Broadway legend (which many people consider her to be) and she's not. Not even close.

I LOVE LILY ST. REGIS TO DEATH. end of story. Kristin Chenoweth did an amazing job with her in the Disney version. Which I own the VHS of too. Well, until my TV/VCR died and ate my tape of it. It was a very sad day.
There's a rumor going around at our school that the spring musical is going to be Annie, which makes me really excited at the prospect of getting to play her. I'll have to wait until Thursday to find out for sure, though.

It's official. We're doing Annie. And I am so excited to be trying out for Lily. Although I will be super pissed if I don't get the part because I'm not blonde. Although I would totally go blonde for it any day.

I don't hate her with a passion but I definetly think Kristin Chenoweth was a better Lily by a mile.

Our Lily was just terrible - really weak and much softer than rooster and miss hannigan. And she thought she was wonderful! EEEK.

ahh thats awful lily is a part where u have to be bold or its no fun. our lilly was great she stood on a desk for her solo and hannigan pushed her off. she fell right off the desk and everyone thought she had broke her hip

We were double cast, and both our Lilys were awful. Such a shame. We had such strong Roosters and Hannigans, too.

Two of my friends played Hannigan and Lily in a local production of Annie Jr. I didn't end up getting to see them (  ) but I heard they were amazing. (Doesn't surprise me. They're always amazing! They're so much fun to act with.) They were EXTREMELY over the top, and Hannigan would literally spit in Lily's face. You can tell just by the pictures that they were BY FAR the best part of the show. (I really hope I can borrow one of their DVD's of the show soon and be proven right!)
Lily is definitely an awesome role. Must be played over the top crazy. I love her!
And for the record, I liked Bernadatte's better than Kristin's.

Bernadette was the first Lily I saw and my favorite. Kristin is okay in the role but not too impressing.

One Lily isn't better than the other really, it's just the type of Lily you prefer.
Bernadette played Lily more to the greedy type of role, and less with the airhead, and Kristen played Lily to more of the airhead role and less with the greedy. Keep in mind, that the two versions are completely different.

Personally I thought that Chenoweth's Lily was terrible. I much prefered Bernadette Peters' version.
I agree that Lily is a completely all-or-nothing part. Between her and Hannigan a show can be completely transformed.
