character choices for the witch

well hello there

i'm going out for the witch in a local theatre production of into the woods and i'm so lost on how to act it. i'm fine with the singing but i'm having trouble finding how i want to act her. i understand the character and i know what i want but i'm having trouble actually getting the actions into my body... if u know what i mean.

so i guess the first questions is... any advice on helping me out with the acting. like, if u've been in the show or seen it, what did the actress do that made her stand out.

secondly is the voice. i'm so lost on the voice when she's the witch. so any advice on that would be great as well.

and last is character choices for when she's transformed. like, i saw a production of it and the girl was really good but she left her arms at her sides. i don't really wanna do that so does anyone have any idea on what to do with my arms. like, put one on a hip, crossed, what? i'm so lost.

thank you so very much

I would suggest watching the OBC video/DVD with Bernadette Peters as the witch. I think she gets a really great balance in the witch's character, she is sarcastic, hard hearted and witty, but at the same time she is gentle and tender towards Rapunzel. Out of all the characters in the show she can see the clearest, and understands what will, or could happen in various places, this is just my opinion on the character though.
As to the way you should act it, I think you should try and find your own interpretation. It might combine elements from other productions you've seen, but ultimately it should be how you feel when playing the character. For example, when performing Stay With Me you shouldn't be thinking 'Oh, okay. Here she's warning Rapunzel about the outside world and trying to justify herself. How can I show that?' you should be thinking as the witch, if you understand me.

Sorry if this is total waffle, I'm just typing stuff as it comes into my head Confused Just be yourself, and think about how you would feel, and how the character develops, and you'll be fab (not that you won't be fab if you don't think about these things) Let us know how it goes!
