Changing the ShowIf you could direct the show, what would you change?
I would like to have kept the original idea of No One Mourns the Wicked. Having the Scarevrow. Lion and Tinman being interviewed.
I would also have a scene in Elphaba's hiding. Where she hears about Nessa's death, Chistery could bring her a message or something. She could question herself if it is a trap, or is someon lieing.

What Salome must remember is to think of the book, the musical and The Wizard of Oz film as seprate things. That's what I do.
The musical is aimed at any audience.
The book is aimed at adults.
The film is aimed at family's.

Honestly, if I could direct it, I would do Monsieur D'Arque's version of it (the minimalist version, discussed on this site). It is a uniqe way of telling the story without using flashy sets or expensive costumes.
Of course, the Broadway version as it is, is amazing... but I would really like to direct the minimalist version one day.

The only problem with that is that the story itself isn't strong enough to hold up a minimalist production. it simply isn't a terribly strong narrative. Part of the awesomeness of Wicked is that you feel you are literally transported to Oz where the original story occurred and with the amazing sets and lights the show has, basically everything to do with that.
It would however be interesting to see a straight-play done using the stronger storyline from the original novel.

Personally I think a show that can only survive as a spectacle is lame.
Yeah, Wicked is pretty damn cool as far as sets, costumes, lighting, special effects, make up, etc. etc. But I think if a few actors sat down on a bare stage in white t shirts and jeans and did a straight reading the show wouldn't get nearly as many positive reviews (at least as far as the book goes). I think a good book is the key ingredient to a great show...unfortunately mainstream society dosen't agree.

Thank you, Luc. I'm currently preparing the absolute final draft of my minimalist staging- I recently found a copy of the London revisions, and I'm looking to see if any of them belong in a definitive copy. Then I'll put up Minimalist Wicked on my web site for all.

well..
I'd have Jason Robert Brown do the music and Lyrics
James Lapine do the book.
make sure the script was based closer on the novel
and Not cat Cheno in the dmaned thing.

I would turn it into a series of monologues with a 1984-esq backdrop and use the darker parts of the novel using the political landscape as the main theme.

3. Tell the story from Elphaba's point of view, rather than Glinda's.

And I would only change tiny things... put Dr Dillamond in tap shoes, and give Elphaba the third below 'something I could do for her' which sounds lovely and makes it clear that she intends to thank Galinda for Nessarose by proxy.
Oh, and get rid of the 'the artichoke is steamed' 'joke'. It's just not funny.

1. Elphaba would melt and die at the end.
2. Give Nessarose, Boq, Mme. Morrible, the Wizard, and Dr. Dillamond bigger and better parts.
3. Make Elphaba more insane, Fiyero less shallow, and the Wizard more evil, like they were in the novel.
4. Cut "Wonderful"
5. Get rid of and redo the god-awful choreography.
6. Not cast Shoshana Bean.

sorry... this might be a little far... but i have goats, i show goats, and have i have trimed thousands of goats hooves... they are very soft and dont really make a noise, deffently nothing like the sound of tap shoes... your thinking more of horses and the only reason why they make that sound is because of the metal shoes people put on them, but they too have naturaly soft hooves not as soft as goat of course but not as hard as the metal shoes, thats why we put metal shoes on them to protect their soft hooves
and if i changed something, i would leave what is already there because i love the fact i can take my young niece to it and she enjoys it, but i would add in no one morns the wicked instead of the three things the time dragon shows us, there would be a forth ... it would be that part in the book where elphaba's mother trys taking her near the water to hopefully throw her in

The humor in the show was super forced. And this is coming from someone who relishes cheesy humor.
I was amazed at how EAGER the audience was to laugh. I mean, a tiny hand gesture made everyone die laughing. I kept wondering if the audience was on crack, lol. It was amusing and many of the cheesier bits made me crack a smile, but it wasn't something to die laughing like everyone in the audience did. After awhile, it got so annoying.
The girl next to me wlaughed so suddenly and loud at one point, she blew my ear out. I think it was when Glinda did a faint kicking gesture in the line "you'll be good at sports" in Popular. I don't see how that could produce such a hearty laugh. Odd.

The point of this message board is so that people can share their personal opinions, not so we can all put on a happy face and like the same things. That would be boring.

Anyway, yeah, the humor was really, really forced. It was ridiculous.
Like when Glinda went on her "Lalalala" thing in Popular, I swear people were rolling and choking on their laughter. I was like...It's not THAT funny.
If it'll make you feel better, I've often thought the same thing during the Thenardier scenes in performances of Les Misérables (my fave show). So, don't take it as an attack on this show only. Audiences in general are always too eager to laugh, it can get annoying.

It amazes me how much an audience can change between locations/performances.
When I saw it, the same scene warranted silence and a few gasps. Someone behind me said "Oh no!".

Ok. I saw it with Julia Murney and Steven Skybell in NY.
Yes, people didn't realize what it meant, and I can see how some less sophisticated people would get confused and think it was supposed to be comical. It's also up to Elphaba to convey how serious it is. As we see, that scene can go either way.

When I went to see "The Producers" we had a pair of old granny's next to us and none of them laughed at all for the entire show.

She's a wonderful singer but I just think that her acting is so stereotypical and unoriginal and overly-planned out, if that makes sense. I mean, I can definitely see how some people like her, but there are times when it seems (to me, at least) that she's so obsessed about sounding good that she forgets to put any effort whatsoever into her acting. I don't know if this makes sense or not. I'm not very good at putting my thoughts into words.
