challenging song just for fun?so im bored this christmas holidays, my flute's getting repaired and i've learned every piano piece we have in the house. So, I was wondering if anyone had any song suggestions for me to learn for fun. I'd like at least one REALLY hard one that i'd have to work at.
I'd usually do ballads but would also do up-tempo songs. I'm 14, mezzo (but could probably be classified sop) range E2-C6 (or it might be C5, the one 2 octaves above middle C), belter..I think thats all
I'll take all suggestions on board and will record any of them if u want to hear them.
Thanks,
laura

And try a character piece - I'm assuming you don't do them all that often if you sing ballads most of the time. I can't think of a good one off the top of my head, but find something that uses a lot of acting - it will really help with all your other songs.
And I second the G & S idea - look at "The Sun Whose Rays are All Ablaze". It's a lot of fun and challenges your breathing.

I must say one thing.

I agree that doing something challenging is fun. It is good to see what you can do and try hard. I worked on a 13 page long Mozart aria my freshman yeat in high school. Very challenging.
But, do not push yourself too hard. A challenge does not mean something like belting "Defying Gravity" or The Queen of the Night aria from Die Zauberflote. You only get one voice. Don't push it too much. It is easier to hurt your voice than you think.
I also would think that "Sun Whose Rays" is good.
Poor Wandring One might be too high.

I too was going to suggest a G&S song, but one of their patter songs. Or just a patter song in general.
Look at "I am the very model of a modern major general" from Pirates of Penzance (although for a bass) or "Not Getting Married Today" from Company.

Well, I have a suggestion that's not remarkably challenging note-wise, but lyrically it's a lot of fun.
"Getting Married Today" from Company. Amy's part, at least.

The Major Modern General is a bass role? Hmmmm.... I'm not sure he is...

I'm sure all of the guys that have been to the new poll that mostly debates over the greatness of baritones would appreciate it if you would distiguish between the two and not get us mixed up.

'A Modern Major General' is one of my favourites - I used to be able to sing it perfectly. Although up an octave, of course.
The 'Nightmare' song from Iolanthe is similarly challenging, and of course there's the wonderful 'I've Got A Little List' from the Mikado. Great fun! |
Why are all the patter songs for the men?? "How Beautifully Blue the Sky" from Pirates is the only female patter song I can think of. And that song just says the same 4 phrases over and over again and is frequently interrupted by Mabel and Frederick.
*Ooh! I just thought of one! My old director, who essentially travels the country directing just G&S, told me that the trio between Frederick, Ruth, and the Pirate King in the second act is supposed to be a patter song and just go ridiculously fast. I can't remember the name, but it comes right after "Paradox," and they're singing, "tonight he dies yes or early tomorrow, his girls likewise they will welter in sorrow..."
