Re: Cause I'm Curious: What is YOUR favorite Sondheim Song?Anyone Can Whistle, because of the emotional impact. It's so simple and perfect, and captures brilliantly the feeling of restraint.Please, Hello, because the counterpoint of five admirals and the intensely tricky rhyme patterns are the epitome of what one can do with musical theatre, and the sheer brilliance can make me cry if I'm in the right mood. It makes me feel one can make some sense in a chaothic world. A Little Priest, because it's so morbid and funny, it's probably the funniest song written. |

Well I can't say much since I'm new to him. The only Musicals I've heard where Sweeney Todd and Assassins. So far I love most of the songs on Sweeney Todd, For Assassian's, my favorite part so far is the monologue In the Second Act of the play with Sam Byke.

I'm really fond of "Sunday" just because the scene is so beautiful when they recreate the painting on stage, and I'll always have that image when I listen to it. I also really like "Barcelona", I don't know why.

Probably 'Move On,' because no matter how many times I hear it, it always makes me very emotional.
| broadwaybirdie |
YES actually, a lot of the stuff in Sunday... does.[/i] |
||||||

That's so true: Finishing the Hat, We Do Not Belong Together, Move On, Sunday, Children and Art....'Sunday in the Park' is one of the most emotionally-satisfying musicals around in my opinion, but I suppose it doesn't hurt that I idolize Bernadette Peters. |

Bernadette is fiery! I love her:D I just saw the revival of Sunday..., and it was so amazing. I also really like the song "Beautiful" |
||||||

Ah, man, I would love to see the revival, but sadly a trip to New York just isn't the cards for me right now, haha.
Are we only allowed to have one favorite Sondheim song? I have different ones for different moods: Someone in a Tree, No One is Alone, A Little Priest, How I Saved Roosevelt...it's tough. But if we can only have one, I'm sticking with 'Move On.' |

| Salome |
Its hard to pick just one.
Sorry/Grateful... one oft he truest songs written. The Road You DIdnt Take.. WHistful and honest A Little Priest...Delightfully witty and clever Could i leave You?- Elegantly venomous. |

Children Will Listen - What can I say, there just aren't enough cautionary songs that deal with the awesome power of communication. "Children may not obey but children WILL listen... careful the spell you cast, not just on children, sometimes the spell may last past what you can see and turn against you." Indispensible advice for storytellers of all stripes, IMO.
Sunday - (From "Remember, George!" on) The perfect finale to a perfect first act, IMO. Just staggering. A great example of kind of soaring melodies Sondheim can write when a piece calls for it. Someone is Waiting - Captures romantic bachelor confusion perfectly. "A Susan sort of Sarah, a Jenny-ish Joanne... Hurry! Wait for me!" As sincere as it is adolescent. Sorry/Grateful - I'm with Salome. A Weekend in the Country - A song that covers multiple events and keeps the show moving - quite fast, I might add. Not only doesn't it stop the action, it is the action, yet it manages to stay beautifully melodic throughout. A musical theatre masterpiece, IMO. Of course there are more, but I probably should stop someplace... |

Marry Me a Little - Asks the question of "why do people in relationships insist on making each other miserable?" (and it's just plain pretty)
Johanna Quartet - Again, just a beautiful lyric piece Bring Me My Bride - Absolutely hilarious The Ballad of Guiteau - Poignant and funny at the same time. Stay With Me - Acted right, it's not just a beautiful lyrical piece, but it's also very emotional Another National Anthem - rousing and disturbing at the same time. A Weekend in the Country - ... can't say why... just hit me over the head with how BIG of a number it is Sunday - Again, beautiful lyrical piece |

This is an impossible question to answer, but I'll try.
Being Alive - This is the only Sondheim song I can sing. The lyrics are fantastic and personally relevant to me. Finishing the Hat/Lesson #8 - I think about these songs when I'm struggling with creative work. Epiphany - I listen to this song when I'm angry. It's a nice release. A Little Priest - my favorite comic song (closely followed by Getting Married Today) Pretty Women - my favorite romantic song A Weekend in the Country - my favorite ensemble piece (followed closely by God That's Good and Into the Woods prologue), very funny and witty |

Stay With Me. I just think this is such a beautiful song. The way that Bernadette Peters did this song in the OBC was just so emotional and left me speechless. The first Sondheim song to actually make me cry.
There are so many other songs I love and will get around to put my thoughts on them here later. |

I don't have a most favorite, but I have a few.
A Little Preist-Sweeney Todd-It's an incredibly witty song. Epiphany-Sweeney Todd-Sondheim's best song, I'd say. Buddy's Blues-Follies- Catchy tune, catchy lyrics. Hello Little Girl-Into the Woods- Ever watch George Hearn sing this to Ruthie Henshall in Putting it Together? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHmM_byJWKk&feature=PlayList&p=C701D85B85AC789E&index=6 |
