Watching these old videos from Paris made me realize how sloppy that production was and how happy I felt when I joined the London cast, directed by the fabulous and demanding Chrissie Cartwright.
With her I learned all about the show. I can never thank her enough for that. Maybe one day she will get all the praise she deserves for it is because of her dedicated work that Cats has stayed so long and in such good shape in London. Also should be praised the work of Karen Dawson for the fabulous make ups. |

Still, though, it's always nice to see other versions. I grew up with the US version and wasn't really acquainted with any others until the film, save for the different soundtracks.
Thanks again! O/T, I saw this article on Yahoo and thought of you: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060814/od_nm/barbie_dc_2 |

Thank you for all the videos. I could watch them for hours. Oh, and I have a question for you, from my friend, who I made sit through a whole bunch of videos. She says that in London, everyone cheers for you when you're on stage doing a complicated move, but in Paris, they didn't cheer for you in the middle of the song at all. She wants to know why that is.

Guess all audiences are different and sometimes are not as responsive as others..
But on the other hand.. maybe I wasnt very impressive that night! A Vienna cast memebr once told me I made it look much too easy and that was why I didnt get much response... maybe I should've made it look painful! lol |
||
| Smudge |
You do make it look quite easy! I think that's the appeal of that number though--seeing someone do such difficult moves with such ease. Maybe that's just cuz I'm a dancer myself though... and because my turns suck... |

I posted some other videos last night of Misto performances on the board.

Thanks Guy-Paul, those videos must have some historic importance. I mean, are there any other recordings of the performances? I really like how that shoe does a .....WHUMP!.... I understand the nature of live theater but so much is lost to future generations. That's why I like these recordings.

Amazing! Where did you learn to dance like that? It's wonderful! (I think my Misto-loving four-year-old sister loves you now, by the way. |

I adore it when Munkustrap sniffs the air in Naming of cats.
It's the little details I like! I always thought that when listening to the french recording that 'naming of cats' was very agressive by the consonants and the volume levels, and now seeing it, it is certainly more defensive than some other versions I have seen, almost as if the tribe is so angry that they have to justify themselves to a human, after all the 'man over there' didn't even know what a jellicle was......stupid human! Thankyou for sharing Guy-Paul.

so messy...and pig-tail...y...
I was waiting for you to sing Guy-Paul...but disappointed. |
||
| Misto |
Ditto! But, I'll be hearing him sing next week - twice! Does nobody else think "Cats on helium" when the chorus part starts? |
||
| Misto06 |
In some productions like Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris or Zurich Misto didnt sing at all.
I guess it was mainly because it was very hard to get someone able to dance ballet at a high level, tap, move his butt and sing back then. Remember in the 80s and 90s musicals were not a big thing yet in most European countries and performers were not trained for them except in the UK. So they did have a "mute" version for Misto. As for poor Victoria, she was 4th cast for it and almost never did it before. Add to this we all knew someone was filming the show for archives. that's all folks. |

Part 4... Gumbie!Well.. although there was a few mixed reactions to the last video I posted, here is the 4th part of the full Cats Paris "official" videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9vbymMdzPU Enjoy! GP |

Good one!
Thanks so much Guy-Paul! |

Thanx again, Guy-Paul! I've never seen the tap duet in the US version. Was that London, too, or just the French?
Actually, I saw part 3. Was the woman who played Victoria left-handed? I've never seen the solo reversed like that otherwise. And I liked it. |
||
| Misto06 |
Well, I'm gonna sound old... so what?LOL
so.. In my days, in London, Quaxo was actually singing the Gumbie Cat song and performing the tap duet/duel. I think London was the only version that had this in it as the 1st Misto was already a big star there. About Victoria in Paris... I honestly can say... I have no idea!!! Paris wasn't my fave production and I forgot most things about it. I think this was the 1st time I was on stage with Rachel as Victoria. I would have to see my other Paris tapes ... and other casts! Re: Part 4... Gumbie!
Thanks Guy-Paul, that was interesting. It seems that the Paris version substitues a bit of "La Marseillaise" instead of the British "Rule Britannia". I don't recall...does the American version use anything? Also the Paris tap dance sequence seems longer than Troika's. And is that tap dancing duet a normal part of the show? With Troika, I don't know how much of the original show has been trimmed. |

I somewhat agree but I still find the Paris production entertaining and the singing is pretty good. I guess the Paris choreography and blocking needed to be tightened up a bit. |
