CATS in Denver!Hello, Forum!
I know it's been a while since I've posted anything, but I do lurk and read thru posts and LOVE the pictures of the various productions.
My credit card is crying, but I HAVE to attend "CATS". I can't believe the prices they can charge, but it's "CATS". . .I don't know when/if it will be back again. Anyway, I'm attending the Wednesday and Friday performances.
I was reading that the rights to the tour end next Summer. Does anyone know if there will be further tours after that?
Hopeful purrs

Troika's rights to Cats expire this coming summer. As to Troika renewing the rights, I'm not sure. Some other company might pick them up, or they may lapse altogether.
I'm hoping that whoever managed Tour IV picks it up again, and they restore all the material that Troika cut.

Darkmage, that may not be a possibility due to the fact that Troika is Non-Equity. Having an Equity company pick them up and release the rights is very slim now. It's just not as popular a show anymore. Most of the people who see CATS now are people who have seen it before and bring their young family members and such, not first-timers.
With CATS being done now with every High School in the nation, and every puny dinner theatre on the corner it seems like, they may not think it feasible to run the show in it's entirety and full Napier look glory.
I'm going to be sure to be there on closing night however.
Purrs,

ClericalCat it's nice to see you again. I also met you at Disneyland and heard you moved to Colorado. I have some nice things I'm putting up on Ebay this week you should watch out for too!

Heh. I see your point, although I keep bumping into people who have either never seen Cats or only seen the film version. So there's still a market out there. But seeing as promotion of a show is often the key to whether or not it succeeds, and Troika's not doing a lot of it (Equity would bombard the airwaves and print three months before, not run one or two ads two weeks before the show ) it's no wonder it's not as popular as it used to be. Phantom still sells out, and it's nearly as old, so there's really no excuse.
IMHO the regional theatres and high schools are wrecking the show. People see a crappy production, then wonder how the hell it could have lasted for as long as it did, never realising the original production was far different.

Yes I run into people like that all the time too. They always ask, “Oh are they still touring?” and ask how can they find tickets and a touring schedule.
And I’ve always said that CATS could do with a more aggressive marketing strategy however it never comes to pass. I agree with all of it, people do see a bad production and practically scars them for life to see another one. Plus they often badmouth the show b/c of it.
Now I’m not saying that every amateur production is bad, in fact I’m sure most of them are quite good; but if people get a bad taste in their mouth from one performance they tend to thing the rest of them are bad too.
Yes more commercials and newspaper adds and stuff would most defiantly help the show. And maybe a good “refreshing” of the show would help too.
