Cats forum recording?

Over in the Wicked forum, JMan is organising a recording of Wicked using the voices of those who visit the forum. I know a few years ago a fansite attempted to do one for Cats but as far as I know nothing ever came of it. Presuming that the copyright issues could be gotten around so it wasn't completely illegal Laughing would anyone be interested in maybe organising one for Cats?
Flitterbug

Isn't someone doing that over at the cats costume forum?

I personally would have thought you'd have more trouble finding people with good voices. Just because you think you're capable of singing the part does not mean that you should. (Speaking for myself there too. Years and years have passed since the last time I flexed the vocal pipes.)
Peritombry

I hadn't heard of anyone else doing it... is it part of this site? I know there used to be one here but I figured it had been deleted or something. I lost internet for a while, came back and we only had one forum. Laughing

And yes there'd have to be auditions or voting or something.
SianZena

I'd audition for a forum version of cats, for sure!

I haven't a good voice but I could give the playbacks because I have the full show as playback without voices.

That'd be helpful. Thanks. Smile
wtfchuck

I'd happily audition for a good few roles. Very Happy

A multi language one could be interesting.

I may be a complete and utter newbie (have been lurking the forum for the last 2 years), and wouldn't want to tread on anyone's toes, but I would jump (figuratively) at the chance to audition for the roles of Online Skimble or Online Asparagus Track. Very Happy

if there was a recording made, wich script would we be using,London or Broadway? if it were my choice I'd do a mixture of both thus making it possible to do "The Ballad Of Billy McCaw" since it's in English and now includes a lovely ending very similar to that of the Aria.
Mungojerrie_rt

I highly doubt you's get enough males, especially who can do the parts.

Two classical baritones
One Baritone/tenor
One rock tenor
Two character voices
Flitterbug

The Flitterbug would be happy to star as a peculiarly feminine Tugger. That would be funny.

She is also in a silly mood, and talking about herself in the third person.

I'd be down! keep me updated. LOVE cats. such an amazing show to be in. best show i have ever done. would love to be in a recording just for fun Smile such great music....though the duets may be tough...maybe we would just sing half.
Mungojerrie_rt

I think the chorus would hardest.

Here are the playbacks (only Growltigers Last Stand is a piano version)

Thanks that'll be a big help Very Happy

Anyone have any idea if non profit recordings are any easier to get the rights to then fully paid for productions?
Heavylove

I dont know what Really Usefull Group has for rules about this kind off fanfiction/off shelf productions but in Star Trek fan fiction paramount has set a rule that as long as you dont make profit on it (I dont know if it has to be youre onw creation as well!) you can make just about anything and even broadcast it. I think the best idea is to contact the copywright holders and ask, you cant have more than a no and there is a bunch of highschools and other etablisments doing Cats, so why not?
Peritombry

Yeah I'm not planning to make any money from it lol. Unless people want a cd or something but we could just charge cost price for them.
Heavylove

Put the music on the net and every one could burn theyre own cds for free... Wink
Peritombry

That's the idea. Laughing

I'm looking at the RUG site now... it says some may not be available currently as some shows are touring. And for some reason a load of them are only available in the US. I have nothing whatsoever against the US but why there and not the UK? They're not all running in the UK at the moment and they were -written- here. Weird.

Anyway... I'll send an email and see what they say.
Heavylove

Try the copywright section. I posted a question on another matter (if its alouded to write a script on a caracter from cats) and they answered stright away and in a friendly manner.
Peritombry

That's good. I joined the RUG forums when they first opened and I found the moderators pretty rude lol. But maybe they have new ones now. There wasn't an email address for the UK so I sent one to the US distributors instead. I expect most of those auditioning will be from the US. lol

I'd apply for (classical?) baritone! Very Happy I sang some songs from "Die Zauberflöte" - me being Papageno, my partner either Tamina or Papagena (had 2 partners on stage).

I don' think that copyrights should be an issue as long as it is kept "private" and not for any profit-purposes. I had some discussions about CATS pictures I made out of TV recordings 8 years ago. The German production company's statement was "as long as you made it, it's yours". I also haven't experienced any unreasonable hardship so far, as it has always been just "fan work" for private / non profit pleasure.
chrissi2810

I was a member of a group who made a non-profit fan album of the musical Elisabeth and there weren't any copyright issues.
Peritombry

That's good. Smile
I sent an email a while ago now but haven't had any reply yet. Perhaps I should resend it to make sure it got there just to be on the safe side.
Heavylove

Could be a good idea, I guess theyre get a number of inquries every day. Surprised

RUG often doesn't answer emails
Peritombry

It didn't go to RUG. It went to the distribution/copyright agent. The address their site specified to send it to.
