It really depends on what character you want to play, as far as picking songs. When I auditioned, I auditioned for the role of Jemima/Sillabub and I sang "The Water Is Wide" (an Irish folksong).

always audition with a song NOT FROM the musical you are auditioning for. (always bring 16 bars at least of sheet music to accompany you.) Don't be afraid to show your stuff.
do your very BEST!

Not singing a song from the show isn't ALWAYS the best choice, it really depends on the theatre. When I auditioned they preferred a song from the show, but since I didn't know any well (except Memory, and I was NOT going to sing that under any circumstances) I just sang 'Caberet' since it showed off my belt nicely. I ended up just being in the chorus since I couldn't make the call backs, but I did get to audition for Tantomile and got her (small) solos.
If your not doing a song from the show, I would still suggest you do something Webber. Megs part in "Angel of Music" would be a good for Jemima if you don't think it will be over-done.

It depends on the theater and what role you want. It's preferable not to sing a song from the musical. I'm currently rehearsing for a production of Cats running in September. I'm in the role of Rumpelteazer, and my audition song was "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables, which doesn't really match the character, but they had us sing other songs later...
...I personally would say find a song that fits your voice and shows off your range...something you are comfortable singing.

Sing a song you feel comfortable with and that shows your range. I'm sure you'll get a good part.
