Cats audition ...Hey there ...
I'm getting ready for a local theatre's production of Cats ... auditions are in a couple of weeks, but I haven't gotten around to preparing anything.
I know Cats is more of a "Dance show with songs" than a vocally demanding show, but I don't know what song I should audition with. I'm figuring the dance part of auditions to be the deciding factor ... but I still want to sing well. I would like to be cast as Rumpleteazer (sassy song, I'm assuming) or Jemima (chorus cat with several solos) ... 2 very different roles.
I was thinking of "Someone like you" from Jekyll and Hyde as a possibility ... but I'm not really sure. Suggestions, anyone? Thanks so much ... I appreciate it.

Believe it or not this show is somewhat vocally demanding, especially if you are a soprano. Even with all of the solos you'll still be singing a lot more than in other shows.
Anyway, Someone Like You is pretty mature for both of the cats you are thinking of trying out for. Jemima is a very young cat and should have a pure, clear sound. Rumpleteazer is mischievous and requires a lot of energy for her number. I'd try to settle on the one who's style fits you better and go from there. I recommend a youthful soprano ballad for Jemima or a fun uptempo mezzo piece for Rumpleteazer.
